Senckenbergs unermesslicher Nachlass (medizinische wie persönliche Tagebücher) wird derzeit zur Erschließung transkribiert. Der Frankfurter Arzt und Stifter war prominent eingebunden in ein Netzwerk von zumeist radikalpietistischen Ärzten wie Dippel, Carl, Kämpf, Goethes Arzt Metz, die oft zugleich literarisch produktiv waren und alchimische Medikamente produzierten. Verbindungen reichten bis Nordamerika (Ephrata). Ärzte der Aufklärungsära nahmen Anregungen auf, psycho-physische Denktraditionen gingen zur Romantik weiter. Jenseits der bereits besser erforschten medizinischen Schule Halles entsteht ein erweitertes, differenzierteres Bild pietistischer Heilkunst. Die hier miterörterten Konnexe ins Feld der Literatur, Musik und Sprache werden exemplarisch vertieft durch Erträge einer Marbacher Kommissionstagung.

This open access book offers an entangled history of hygiene by showing how knowledge of purity, health and cleanliness was shaped by evangelical medical missionaries and their encounters with people in West Africa. By tracing the interactions and negotiations of six Basel Mission doctors, who practised on the Gold Coast and in Cameroon from 1885 to 1914, the author demonstrates how notions of religious purity, scientific health and colonial cleanliness came together in the making of hygiene during the age of High Imperialism. The heyday of evangelical medical missions abroad coincided with the emergence of tropical medicine as a scientific discipline during what became known as the Scramble for Africa. This book reveals that these projects were intertwined and that hygiene played an important role in all three of them. While most historians have examined modern hygiene as a European, bourgeois and scientific phenomenon, the author highlights both the colonial and the religious fabric of hygiene, which continues to shape our understanding of purity, health and cleanliness to this day.

In early modern times, religious affiliation was often communicated through bodily practices. Despite various attempts at definition, these practices remained extremely fluid and lent themselves to individual appropriation and to evasion of church and state control. Because bodily practices prompted much debate, they serve as a useful starting point for examining denominational divisions, allowing scholars to explore the actions of smaller and more radical divergent groups. The focus on bodies and conflicts over bodily practices are the starting point for the contributors to this volume who depart from established national and denominational historiographies to probe the often-ambiguous phenomena occurring at the interstices of confessional boundaries. In this way, the authors examine a variety of religious living conditions, socio-cultural groups, and spiritual networks of early modern Europe and the Americas. The cases gathered here skillfully demonstrate the diverse ways in which regional and local differences affected the interpretation of bodily signs. In June 1722, three families from Moravia settled on the estate of Count Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf in Berthelsdorf, Saxony. Known as the community of Herrnhut, their settlement quickly grew to become the epicenter of a transatlantic religious movement, one that would attract thousands of Europeans, American Indians, and enslaved Africans: the Moravian Church. Written by one of the leading archivists of the Moravian Church, this book investigates the origins of Herrnhut. Paul Peucker argues that Herrnhut was intended to be a Philadelphian community, uniting “true Christians” from all denominations. It was a separatist movement, but it concealed its separatism behind the pretense of an affiliation with the Lutheran Church and behind a chosen historical identity, that of the renewed Unity of Brethren. Peucker’s analysis, based on hundreds of documents from archives in Germany and the United States, demonstrates how Herrnhut was able to grow and thrive despite existing regulations against new religious groups, uncovers Count Zinzendorf’s role in keeping Herrnhut outside the state church, and provides a new foundation from which to interpret the Moravian church’s later years. Three centuries after Herrnhut’s founding, this intriguing history brings to light new information about the early years of the Moravian church. Peucker’s work will be especially valuable to students and scholars of eighteenth-century religion, Pietism, and Moravian history.

Die Wirkungen des Pietismus als der wichtigsten Reformbewegung des deutschen Protestantismus, der im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert die Mehrheit der Bevölkerung erfasst hat, auf die deutschsprachige Literatur zwischen Sturm und Drang und Romantik sind in Umrissen erforscht und bekannt. Sie erklären grundlegende Unterschiede gegenüber den europäischen Nachbarkulturen, die spezifische Eigenart der deutschen Aufklärung, erste Anstöße zu konfessioneller Toleranz, auch gegenüber den Juden, Traditionen empfindsamer Innigkeit, Herzenssprache und inspirativ-ekstatischer Poetologie. Gegenüber den theologischen sind aber literaturwissenschaftliche Zugriffe auf das pietistische Schrifttum selbst, auf die pietistische Lyrik, die Lebenszeugnisse, Bibelübersetzungen, auf die pietistische Sondersprache und ihre Argumente, noch rar. Eine Auswahl einschlägiger Pilotstudien des auf diesem Feld mannigfach hervorgetretenen Genfer Germanisten aus den letzten 30 Jahren, von dreien seiner vormals Göttinger Schüler neu vorgelegt, soll dazu dienen, dieses Defizit zu verringern. A complex process of transformation creating the breakthrough into the modern age, with effects that are still formative today, took place in the history of the Western church in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The most important semantic elements in it, which gradually separate out into the Age of Denominations, Pietism and the Enlightenment, describe three forms of Christian life and thought that overlap in many ways and only produce a sufficiently nuanced overall picture of early modern church history when they are viewed as forming a complete whole.
