An dieser Stelle stehen in vie1en Biichern nicht selten langatmige Rechtfertigungen und Erklarungen zum Inhalt und Aufbau, zur Wichtigkeit des Themas und zur Legitimation der gewahlten Perspek tive. Auf all das mochte ich verzichten und dem Leser die dadurch gewonnene Zeit zur VerfUgung stellen, urn kurz nachzudenken iiber das eigene Arzt-Sein, iiber das Helfer-Sein, das Patient-Sein und iiber das verbindende Moment dieser Teilbereiche: das Mensch-Sein. Denn nur darin kann sich letztlich alle Medizin legitimieren - die Biicher iiber Medizin nicht ausgenommen. Allen Autoren danke ich fUr die spontane und unkomplizierte Zu sammenarbeit, und ich freue mich personlich sehr dariiber, daB die Idee zu diesem Projekt von allen Seiten groBte Unterstiitzung gefunden hat. Danken mochte ich auch den Mitarbeitern des Springer-Verlags, die in irgendeiner Form dazu beigetragen haben, daB dieses Buch erscheinen konnte; besonders aber Herrn Priv.-Doz. Dr. Graf-Bau mann, der dieses Projekt von Anfang an sehr wohlwollend und liebevoll begleitet hat. Meine Position, von welcher ich als Sozialwissenschaftler an das Thema Medizin herangehe, mochte ich dem Leser nicht vorenthalten. Sie ist entscheidende Triebfeder fUr das medizinsoziologische Engage ment und konnte nicht besser ausgedriickt werden als mit den Worten Paul Liiths, der in seinem Buch Medizin als Politik schreibt: Wir stehen vor der Unterscheidung zwischen der sozialen Realitat Medizin, ihrer Praxis, und der Auffassung der Medizin als reiner Wissenschaft, sowie dem Widerspruch zwischen dem, was die Arzte tun, und dem, was sie denken.
