Probably no two topics have generated more workshops, con ferences, and lectures in medicine and education than the chron ically ill child and the mandate of Public Law 94-142. In spite of the numerous examinations of these topics there has never been a serious dialogue between medical professionals and educators with the child as the focus. These proceedings represent such a unique event. The paradigm of the medically exceptional child is the child with cancer, a child with a life-threatening illness, but also a child with a high probability of being cured of this acute disease. Such a cure is purchased at a cost of late sequelae of disease and treat ment alike. There is prejudice against this child. There is overt physical exceptionality. Therefore, the Fifth Annual Mental Health Conference of The University of Texas System Cancer Center, Department of Pediatrics, was a stimulus to generate this dialogue. When two nationally recognized giants in their respective fields, The University of Texas System Cancer Center and the Houston Independent School District, address a problem, the result transcends local concern. This conference goes far beyond the problem of the child with cancer to deal with all medically exceptional children. The focus on the needs and expectations for the child makes this workshop universal in application.

This study explored the perceptions of teacher preparedness from educators' and administrators' points of view, and the value of social work assistance during the learning process when educating a child who has survived cancer. Social work leadership and advocacy in the school setting can assist professional school staff in feeling confident to provide services to children with unique needs, such as learning differences experienced among pediatric cancer survivors. The Pediatric Cancer Survivor Educator Survey was developed by the researcher and distributed to all professional staff members in the participating school district. The final sample of quantitative data includes 63 participants (N = 63). Of the six presented hypotheses, three were found to be significant. The findings highlight the lack of knowledge by educators on the unique learning needs of pediatric cancer survivors in the school setting. Results indicate that knowledge is positively associated with feelings of confidence and preparedness in meeting the needs of pediatric cancer survivors in the school setting. Results also found that previous experience working with cancer survivors showed improvement in preparedness and confidence when meeting the needs of pediatric cancer survivors in an educational setting. In addition, it was found that educators were accurate in their self-ratings of knowledge on the topic, when comparing to the actual score of the base knowledge quiz. The mean score of this portion of the measure was approximately 50%, indicating an overall lack of knowledge in the sample. The current study demonstrates the need for school social work leadership in the development of trainings and programs, as well as systems navigation, all which are vital to support educators when providing services to this student population.

The teacher is a key advocate for the student with cancer while the child is at school. Students with cancer are challenged with a new level of care that may prevent them from attending school regularly due to doctor appointments and hospitalizations. New concerns may develop due to treatment for cancer such as fatigue, nausea, loss of self-esteem, learning disability, and/or inability to keep up with homework. In order for the teacher to understand the role and responsibility of having a student with cancer, he or she needs to have quality information about how best to assist the student with cancer to succeed in the classroom. Currently, there are limited resources specifically designed to assist teachers, and resources are not readily available. My advocacy project was to develop a web page as a resource and collaboration tool to support the role of the teacher of the student with cancer. This web page permits the teacher to view available resources, access links, download information, collaborate with professionals at the St. Vincent Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Clinic in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and collaborate with another educator to aid the student with cancer. By utilizing the web page, the teacher will increase his or her awareness and understanding of childhood cancer and become better prepared to meet the educational needs of the student with cancer.
