An explosion of flourishing black megachurches has changed the landscape of American religious life. Boasting memberships into the tens of thousands and meeting within both adorned walls and refurbished warehouse buildings, these contemporary fruits of the Civil Rights Movement hold many of the resources necessary to address America's contemporary social disparities. After studying nearly 150 black megachurches, Tamelyn N. Tucker-Worgs asks, How are these church communities engaging the public sphere? And, why are their approaches so varied? The Black Megachurch sets aside the broad assumptions usually applied to the study of black churches and analyzes the three factors most necessary for social engagement—theological orientation, organization of community development initiatives, and gender-based spheres of labor and leadership. In doing so, Tucker-Worgs underscores the myriad ways in which black megachurches have responded to the changing social climate and concludes that while some have lived up to their potential, others have a long way to go.

The Routledge Handbook of Megachurches provides a survey of global megachurch phenomena, with an international slate of authors introducing existing and emerging research on a wide variety of relevant topics. Over the past decade, the field of megachurch studies has matured and become global in its scope and orientation. The Handbook offers 33 chapters by top scholars in the field, focusing in particular on: The location, demographic nature, and transnational connections of megachurches. Megachurch worship, hermeneutics, and theology (in theory and practice). Megachurch institutional dynamics. The various ways that megachurches have both influenced and been influenced by their social contexts in terms of class, age, gender, sexuality, and pop culture. The Handbook's interdisciplinary orientation makes it essential reading for sociologists, political scientists, anthropologists, media specialists, pop culture observers, business strategists, leadership consultants, marketing analysts, scholars of religion, and Christian historians, theologians, and missiologists. Experienced scholars of megachurches will gain valuable insight into aspects of megachurch research beyond their own specializations. Scholars new to the field will find the chapters useful as signposts for where to begin their own academic exploration. Christian pastors and laypeople will learn more about this increasingly prominent and influential form of their faith.

The idea of mega-ness is pivotal to the nature, characteristics and vision of megachurches as a social-divine structure grounded on the belief in grand, mega-God, whose omnipotence is revealed, encountered and dramatised in space and place. Although the concept of megachurch has been discursively and theoretically problematic, sprouting and scouting for a big-idea-grasping that is in itself elusive, the book takes a pragmatic detour to engage and nuance, and also beat into manageable shape, what can readily be construed as megachurch, at least, in Africa. It argues that megachurch is not only related to from the prism of its exponentiality and grandiosity, a feature that is pervasive in its conceptualisation, but it is also much more inserted into a socio-cultural, political and religious context, that is at once empirical and relatable, responsible and responsive, daring and appealing, local and transnational, spiritual and mundane, controversial and soothing. The institutionalisation of megachurch legitimises its existence, radar and reach in terms of social mobilisation, charismatics and incarnationality. Central to the praxis of megachurches is digital turn that zooms out the Mega Mega powers and affluence of mega-pastors, mega-narratives, mega-miracles, and mega-messes. All of this is sited and situated most profoundly within the mega-failure of state to be responsible, and account for mega-wealth that African political rulers vanquished into their private lounges. The megachurch and state relations might appear complexified and mutually beneficial, the knack with which some Africa’s megachurches’ pastors churches churches dribble and meander through this midfield, constantly calls to mind the Megachurches Megachurches claim of divine imprimatur and the future of its pentecostality

Megachurches are of relatively recent vintage. Their numerical strength invests them with social and financial power. To whom, if anyone, however, are megachurches accountable? What role do they play as innovators in missions? How have their enormous influence and financial strength been harnessed? What lessons can be learned? What course corrections ought to be made? Over the course of a week, the third meeting of the Korean Global Mission Leadership Forum (KGMLF), held in Korea in 2015, addressed these and related questions. Combining the insights of a rich mix of Korean and international megachurch leaders and scholars, Megachurch Accountability in Missions: Korean and Global Case Studies offers analysis, critique, and positive recommendations for future megachurch engagement in mission.

Charismatic pastors, fast-paced worship sessions, inspirational but shallow theology, and large congregations - these are just some of the associated traits of Pentecostal megachurches. But what lies beneath the veneer of glitz? What are their congregations like? How did they grow so quickly? How have they managed to negotiate local and transnational challenges? This book seeks to understand the growth and popularity of independent Pentecostal megachurches in Southeast Asia. Using an ethnographic approach, the chapters examine Pentecostal megachurches in Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Singapore. Each chapter dwells on the development of the megachurch set against the specific background of the country's politics and history.
