Branding, says James Twitchell, is nothing more than commercial storytelling; brands are the stories that are associated with products. (For example, the special taste of Evian, says Twitchell, is in the brand, not the water.) Branding has become so successful, so ubiquitous that even institutions that we thought were above branding, antithetical to branding, have succumbed. Such cultural institutions as religion, higher education, and the art world have learned to love Madison Avenue or lose market share. Of course, most ministers, university presidents, and museum directors will insist that branding has nothing to do with them, but as Twitchell brilliantly demonstrates in this witty, insightful examination of three of our most important cultural institutions, wherever supply exceeds demand branding follows. The rise of the megachurch epitomizes branding in religion. From its inception the megachurch was designed not to compete with other churches but to bring in the "unchurched," especially men, worshippers who might otherwise be home watching television or strolling through the mall on a Sunday morning. The megachurches have been phenomenally popular, none more so than Willow Creek Community Church, just south of Chicago, one of the oldest megachurches, which Twitchell analyzes in Branded Nation. Colleges and universities have embraced branding as they have grown more alike. Especially among the top schools in the country, the student bodies, the faculties, often even the campuses themselves are practically interchangeable. What distinguishes each school is the story it tells about itself. Now every institution of higher learning has its image organizers, its brand managers, usually in the admissions or development offices, whose job it is to make their institution seem different from all the rest. Even museums, with their multimillion-dollar Monets, have seen the advantages of branding. The blockbuster exhibitions often put familiar paintings in a new context, that is, they provide a new narrative, branding the art. Museums keep expanding their stores, placing them not just near the entrance on the ground floor but throughout the museum, in the galleries themselves. Some museums, such as the Guggenheim, even franchise themselves, turning the institution itself into a brand. In short, high culture is beginning to look more and more like the rest of our culture. In perhaps his most subversive observation, Twitchell doesn't condemn the branding of cultural institutions. On the contrary, he believes that branding may be invigorating our high culture, bringing it to new audiences, making it a more integral part of our lives. Not since Bobos in Paradise has there been such a trenchant, provocative analysis of our world.

Our religious world is changing and many traditional expressions of Christianity seem to be in serious decline. By way of contrast, a relatively new type of church - in the form of large megachurches - appears to be growing to the point where they are replacing traditional denominational churches in size and influence. This book traces the origins and development of megachurches in Australia, in particular through a careful and detailed study of the origins and growth of the Christian Outreach Centre movement. It explores reasons for the growth of the megachurches and the lessons that can be learnt from this form of church. It examines their revivalist religious experiences, their organisational structures and leadership styles; and asks how these have helped the growth of megachurch, as well as their expansion into new activities such as schools, social welfare and political lobbying. It also considers lessons to be learnt from their ability to develop an affiliated network of smaller churches, local and overseas missions, and the growth of new national and international megachurch denominations. Based on a ten year study that explores the historical, social and religious dimensions of Australia's megachurches, the book examines reasons why this experiential form of religion seems attractive to many Australians when many traditional mainstream religious institutions struggle to attract adherents. It evaluates the contribution of such churches to the lives of participants, the wider mission of Christianity and their role in Australian society. This is a study of megachurch growth in Korea with particular focus on the Gwacheon Presbyterian Church (GPC). The megachurch phenomenon, and its rapid growth, is no accident. It has come about through numerous factors-internal, external, biblical, spiritual, and sociological in nature. Healthy church growth is connected to a strong sense of spirituality, the will of God, and other influences from society at large. All of these elements are thoroughly discussed in this research. This study attempts to answer the following key questions: (1) What role do Korean megachurches lay in the nation's religious landscape?( 2) What makes the megachurch model so successful in recruiting and retaining a large number of members? (3) What factors contribute to its sustainability and propagation? In order to answer these questions, I examined various theoretical doctrines outlined in secular and sacred sources. Additionally, empirical evidence, a case study, surveys, and statistical methods were employed. Regarding methodology, I combined both quantitative and qualitative methods to evaluate the phenomenon of church growth. Qualitatively, I conducted a case study of GPC, interviewing key leaders of the church; and content analysis f church materials. Quantitatively, two questionnaires ere utilized in 2008 and 2010, and the data as statistically analyzed y Statistical package or Social Sciences (SPSS), focusing on factor analysis. The factors contributing to megachurch growth-based upon senior pastor leadership influence, internal and external influences, growth-based upon senior pastor leadership influence, internal and external influences, and evangelism movements-were statistically verified as showing significant correlation. This research effort will attempt to integrate theoretical doctrines outlined in secular and sacred sources with empirical findings derived from the case study, survey and generated statistics. This work consists of seven chapters. Chapters 1 and 2 provide biblical and theological perspectives on church growth. Chapter 3 discusses contextual variables contributing to megachurch growth. Chapter 4 discusses the methodology of the research. Chapter 5 identifies specific growth factors and trends derived from the survey data, focusing on factor analysis and Analysis of Moment Structure (AMOS). Chapter 6 discusses findings and interpretations based upon the data analysis, and the Conclusion states recommendations for future paradigms of church growth in Korea.
