Western Iberia has one of the richest inventories of Neolithic chambered tombs in Atlantic Europe, with particular concentrations in Galicia, northern Portugal and the Alentejo. Less well known is the major concentration of tombs along the Tagus valley, straddling the Portuguese-Spanish frontier. Within this cluster is the Anta da Lajinha, a small megalithic tomb in the hill-country north of the River Tagus. Badly damaged by forest fire and stone removal, it was the subject of joint British-Portuguese excavations in 2006-2008, accompanied by environmental investigations and OSL dating. This volume takes the recent excavations at Lajinha and the adjacent site of Cabeço dos Pendentes as the starting point for a broader consideration of the megalithic tombs of western Iberia. Key themes addressed are relevant to megalithic tombs more generally, including landscape, chronology, settlement and interregional relationships. Over what period of time were these tombs built and used? Do they form a horizon of intensive monument construction, or were the tombs the product of a persistent, long-lived tradition? How do they relate to the famous rock art of the Tagus valley, and to the cave burials and open-air settlements of the region, in terms of chronology and landscape? A final section considers the Iberian tombs within the broader family of west European megalithic monuments, focusing on chronologies, parallels and patterns of contact. Did the Iberian tombs emerge through connections with older established megalithic traditions in other regions such as Brittany, or were they are the outcome of more general processes operating among Atlantic Neolithic societies?

En él proporciona pruebas irrefutables de la localización del Herákleion del Hierón Akrotérion de Gádeira -el afamado templo de Hércules en Iberia-, situado concretamente junto al castro arévaco de la madrileña sierra de La Cabrera. En este otro ensayo, la leyenda de Pyréne tutela la narrativa por los bosques que se incendiaron en Tartessós, un hecho que apuntaba a un volcanismo cuando los ríos de oro y plata corrieron por la superficie de las montañas, arrasándolo todo... El investigador documenta a continuación, cómo la navegación interfluvial en diferentes tipos de embarcaciones, llegaba por Venturada [Tartessís] y El Berrueco hasta cerca del plutón de La Cabrera. Auxiliados de los antiguos caminos de sirga y del mayor volumen del agua en el cauce de los ríos, antes del cambio climático, los barzcos intensificaron el comercio de mercancías y pasajeros, favoreciendo las comunicaciones hasta el Atlántico o el Mediterráneo, por rutas que han sido recogidas por los geógrafos desde la antigüedad más temprana e incluso como es el caso de Odiseo tras la guerra de Troya o los relatos romanos, hasta Estrabón y Silio Itálico. Basándose en las fuentes originales y con la sucesiva ocupación por variadas civilizaciones, el ensayo deletrea un rastro inequívoco en la toponimia de ambas vertientes de la sierra del Guadarrama y de la meseta sur, que, sorprendentemente no ha sido capaz de abducir a los lingüistas ni a los arqueólogos hispanos, desde la denominación árabe y la posterior castellanización de los patronímicos y gentilicios de la topografía actual, como es el caso de Madrid (Karchedón) y Mérida (Rhóme).El lector podrá comprobar paso a paso los vestigios y restos arqueológicos coincidentes con la leyenda y los puntos de alineación de las mímesis legendarias entre los megalitos de la sierra de La Cabrera y la leyenda del nacimiento de Venus (Aphrodita Pyrenaia). La existencia de estos santuarios iberos e incluso otros que apuntalan la leyenda recogida en las fuentes clásicas, de la fundación de Segovia, se vislumbra nítido en el titánico túmulo levantado por Hércules en la mímesis de la sierra de la Mujer Muerta, al enterarse que Pyréne se arroja embarazada al fuego, tras ser violada por Geryón. María Dolores Fernández-Posse (Pachula para todos sus conocidos), empezó su carrera científica como alumna de Antonio Arribas en la Universidad de Granada. Desarrolló su notable capacidad como arqueóloga en las excavaciones que el equipo de Arribas efectuaba por entonces en los asentamientos del Cerro de la Encina (Monachil) y la Cuesta del Negro (Perullena) y completó su doctorado con su tesis "El final de la Edad de Bronce en la Meseta Norte: la Cultura de Cogotas". Paralelamente entró a formar parte de los servicios técnicos de Arqueología del Ministerio de Cultura en 1975, cuando a través de Arribas conoció al que entonces era su responsable, Juan Maluquer de Motes; en ellos trabajó hasta su muerte prematura en 2007. Este libro es un homenaje y un reflejo de la amplia gama de amistades e intereses científicos con que contaba Pachula.
