When do you say mazal tov? What is the English equivalent to the Talmudic expression Alya ve-kots ba ("a sheep's tail with a thorn in it")? What is a get, a golem, a kibbutz, a chalutz? What four plant species are waved during prayers on the harvest festival of Sukkot? You'll find answers to these questions and hundreds of others--all in clear English--in this remarkable collection of the best known, most loved Hebrew words and phrases in the English speaking world. From Acharon to Zohar, this informative and often humorous dictionary features over six hundred Hebrew words and expressions arranged in alphabetical order (the Roman alphabet is used throughout, as well as Hebrew head words). The first such guide to Hebrew, this volume is more than a mere lexicon--it is a jubilant celebration of Hebrew itself, a treasure trove of Jewish wit, wisdom, culture, and tradition. Lewis Glinert provides a concise definition of each entry, and then illustrates the word's usage with generous passages from the Bible and the Talmud, the prayers and the sayings of famous rabbis, the razor's edge of Jewish humor, excerpts from the work of Elie Wiesel, Adin Steinsaltz, S.Y. Agnon, Martin Buber, Naomi Shemer and other contemporary writers, folklore from all over the Jewish world, and colorful slices of modern Israeli life. There are words directly related to the practice of religion, such as amida (a prayer said standing, under one's breath, essentially a cry for help--for wisdom, health, peace, prosperity, and so forth) as well as the names of all the Jewish holy days and religious customs; words from everyday Jewish experience, such peot (the long sidecurls customarily worn by the Chasidim); many words familiar from their use in Israel, such as rega (literally, "one moment," it is the Israeli equivalent of Mexico's mañana) or miluim (army reserve service); and many traditional sayings, such as Tsarat rabim chatsi nechama ("A public woe is half a comfort"). In addition, Glinert provides at the back of the book an alphabetical list of familiar biblical names in English, Sephardi/Israeli Hebrew, and Ashkenazi Hebrew. This celebration of Hebrew language and culture is a joy to read and to use. Everyone from Bible students to collectors of Judaica, from Woody Allen fans to people planning a journey to the Holy Land, will be delighted by this informative volume.

From Footmen To Horsemen written by Dr. James Brewton and has been published by Whitaker House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-09-02 with Religion categories.

Dr. James Brewton has described in detail here a process or progression in spiritual maturity, from salvation to discipleship to leadership. Anyone who has ever served on a sports team, a corporate team, or in the military, knows that teamwork requires discipline, focused effort, humility, honor, respect for authority and character development. It is no different in living life as a Christian. It’s time to become the army of God and the bride of Christ, not just the body of Christ. Make yourself ready Church. You are God’s answer and solution and wisdom to the world’s woes. It’s time to shine even brighter as the darkness increases. It’s not too late Church! Both the world and the Kingdom of God need and deserve your best. Jesus set the example, and modeled transformation for us. He purchased our freedom and redemption and victory and inheritance with His own blood, and His own life. He gave His best; we can do no less. The Church is God’s only plan for the earth; there is no Plan B. We have everything we need to get the job done, so it’s time to stop making excuses and feeling sorry for ourselves. As warriors and championship-winning teams know, the best defense is a good offense. It’s time the Church plays offense again.

The Closing Of The Gates written by Rabbi Lawrence A. Hoffman, PhD and has been published by Turner Publishing Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-05-29 with Religion categories.

N’ilah, “the closing of the gates” is, in many ways, the most anticipated worship service in the entire Jewish calendar. Coming at the end of the 24-hour fast that characterizes Yom Kippur (The Day of Atonement), it symbolizes the days of old when the gates of the ancient Temple closed at last, and with them, the last chance for prayers of atonement and reconciliation with God and with others. Nowadays, the synagogue service that replaced the Temple cult marks the occasion with heightened fervor: the only time all year when the gates of the ark that houses the Torah scroll remain open throughout the service; telltale melodies accompany the occasion; a final blast of the shofar (the ram’s horn) symbolizes the end of the fast and the new beginning that follows; special prayers celebrate the human capacity to create a life that matters beyond our own mortality -- and the presence of God who “reaches out a hand” to invite us into the new Jewish year that N’ilah’s final shofar blast inaugurates. All of this is the topic for volume eight in “Prayers of Awe,” the series devoted to exploring the depth of the Jewish High Holy Days. As with prior volumes, this one too comes with introductory essays on the history, theology, and deeper meaning behind the prayer experience. It then assembles some 40 short and accessible essays designed to unlock the mystery and depth of the occasion. Authors come from all walks of life – clergy and laypeople, scholars and artists, men and women across the generations – and from seven countries (Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Israel, the UK and USA). What music appreciation is to classical music, this series on prayer is to Jewish worship. This volume, in particular, explores Judaism’s timeless message of divine purpose and the ongoing search for meaning in a world of human frailty but also promise.

Lashon hakodesh is not just any language, it is the language with which Hashem created reality. The 22 letters of the aleph beis are the building blocks of the world. Each dibur (utterence) created devarim (things). Furthermore, a word in lashon hakodesh describes the essence of the thing. Each letter has its own innate meaning. Roots are formed through the combination of letters, and they teach us depths we often don't realize exist. What is the connection between Shalach (send) and Shulchan (table)? Dibur (speech) and Midbar (desert)? Or Boker (morning) and Bikur Cholim (visiting the sick)? Beginning with simple questions like these, we learn deep wisdom. This is the language of G-d, the Holy Tongue. It is the bridge which He uses to communicate to us His inner world - the world of His mind and thoughts, so to speak. When understood, Hebrew roots describe the essence of the ideas being discussed - and the essence of life. This original and impressive work explores Hebrew, and takes the reader on an absorbing journey by examining the inter-relationships between family roots, comparing words and unearthing their deeper meanings. In understanding these words, we come to understand ourselves.

Journey Of A Rabbi written by Jack Shechter and has been published by UPA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-08-01 with Religion categories.

This two-volume Journey of a Rabbi consists of essays describing ventures undertaken, events experienced, and ideas articulated that reflect the life work of a rabbi and Jewish educator. What threads its way throughout these writings is a persistent search for ways and means to revitalize Jewish life in our time. Written in lucid and compelling fashion, the story portrays early family influences and mentoring of a searching youth, experiences of a rabbinical student, army chaplain, and pulpit rabbi that brought into focus the tasks ahead. The story proceeds to detail the work as a denominational executive, which broadened concern for the larger community and return to pulpit work devoted to fashioning a “Synagogue-Center.” It then segues into depiction of the comprehensive initiatives in education, the arts and community outreach as Dean at the University of Judaism. Interspersed throughout are “thought” essays about religious phenomena, faith, the personal life, the land of Israel, and “lessons learned” from a lifetime of experiences.
