Die Wakhi-Sprache, eine der grossen Sprachgruppen innerhalb der ostiranischen Pamirsprachen, wird im Norden Pakistans in zwei Hochtalern gesprochen, im oberen Ishkomantal sowie in Gojal, dem oberen Hunzatal. In Gojal wurde die gesamte Bevolkerung nach einer langen Phase raumlicher und sprachlicher Isolierung innerhalb einer kurzen Zeitspanne auf eine Weise mit den Einflussen von Bildung und Migration konfrontiert, die auch ihre Sprache in zunehmendem Mass verandert. Diese Arbeit liefert eine Auswahl an neuem Textmaterial und die darauf basierende Analyse von Entwicklungen wahrend der 1990er Jahre: Das umfangreiche Textkorpus portratiert die Alltagssprache von Wakhi-Sprecherinnen und -Sprechern aus verschiedenen Dorfern anhand von Lebensgeschichten und Beschreibungen ihrer gegenwartigen Alltags- und Lebenssituationen. Im ersten Teil des Werks finden sich neben der Diskussion der Phonetik, der Zusammenstellung des Materials und der Texterstellung eine Analyse des graduellen Sprachwandels bei unterschiedlichen Gruppen der dorflichen Gemeinschaft. Es folgt die Untersuchung der Rolle der Sprachen, die im historischen und sozialen Kontext massgeblichen Einfluss auf das in Gojal gesprochene Wakhi genommen haben (Persisch) oder diesen noch nehmen (Urdu und Englisch) und die Darstellung ihrer Integration in diese Sprache. Die kulturelle Selbstdarstellung, die Diskussion um Sprachbewahrung und Verschriftung des Wakhi durch seine Sprechergemeinschaft in Nordpakistan stellt einen weiteren Untersuchungsgegenstand dar. Der zweite Teil enthalt die Wakhi-Texte, die mehrheitlich auf mit Frauen aller Altersstufen und Bildungsgrade durchgefuhrten Interviews basieren, und ihre Ubersetzungen.
