No fio da navalha Em Meia-noite no século, escrito em 1936-1938, publicado inicialmente em Paris em 1939, Victor Serge nos conduz às profundezas da repressão stalinista contra aqueles que ousaram mobilizar-se, protestar ou discordar dos crescentes desvios a que foi submetida a já não tão jovem Revolução de Outubro. No geral, eram trotskistas ou próximos a eles. Mas houve muitos outros, dezenas de milhares, de diversas procedências político-ideológicas. Nesta obra romanceada, duríssima, Serge quase nos força, aqui e ali, a se deter, a tomar fôlego, a respirar, para, então, voltar à leitura. Se nos faz sentir o alcance dos braços da repressão e dos infames mecanismos que utiliza, nos coloca também em contato com a resistência de personagens, no mais das vezes anônimos, que ousaram levantar a cabeça e dizer não, muitas vezes à custa da própria vida e da perseguição a seus familiares. O belga-russo Victor Serge (Bruxelas, 1890 - México,1947) viveu na antiga URSS por vários anos. Militou na Oposição de Esquerda. Preso em 1928, e, novamente em 1933, foi deportado para Orenburg, pequena cidade na fronteira da Rússia européia e asiática. Em 1936, graças à campanha internacional, foi libertado e banido da Rússia. É com os olhos de quem viveu situações dramáticas da repressão burocrática e stalinista e delas teve relatos, na prisão e na deportação, que envereda em sua dolorosa ficção, perpassada por múltiplos personagens. Alguns apenas buscam a sobrevivência. Outros se conformam, são cooptados, destruídos. Há aqueles – o foco central de sua ficção – que resistem, mesmo sabendo que sobreviviam no fio de navalha implacável. Se um pessimismo feroz quase transborda Meia-noite no século, nele também está presente uma grande confiança na capacidade humana de resistir, nas condições mais penosas, de construir seu futuro, na luta por sociedade justa, igualitária, socialista, da qual depende a sorte da humanidade. Victor Serge jamais abandonou seus ideais socialistas. Eles permearam toda a sua vida, até sua morte precoce, sem que jamais tenha desistido da luta por sua consecução, em um viés revolucionário e radicalmente libertário. Nara H.
