Dies ist meine Schriftensammlung von 1981 bis 2017. György Ligeti und Harry Partch kommen darin zentral vor. Sie beide haben wesentlichen Einfluss auf meine Denkweise und meine Kompositionen gehabt, welche ich immer wieder eingestreut in einer Auswahl beschreibe. Ich widme mich aber auch anderen Komponisten wie Pierre Boulez, Gérard Grisey oder Ben Johnston und meinen Freunden Sidney Corbett, Hubertus Dreyer, John Fonville, Hans Peter Reutter oder Mari Takano. Es geht immer wieder um die Entdeckung neuer Harmonik und Melodik jenseits unserer alten 12 Töne, um neue rhythmische Erfindungen jenseits der alten "Avantgarde". Mich faszinieren Musiken seit jeher von außerhalb Europas. Dem gegenseitigen Reagieren der verschiedenen Musiken gilt mein Hauptaugenmerk.

Wir müssen mit zwei Missverständnissen aufräumen, die vielfach über György Ligeti kursieren: Ligeti war kein Nostalgiker. Und er war nie ein Avantgardist, er konnte "Avantgarde" folglich nicht "verraten". Brahms war bei Ligeti eine Computeradresse in einem hybriden Konzept "Horntrio", nicht mehr, wie auch die Adresse "...und Steve Reich ist auch dabei" in den Drei Stücken für zwei Klaviere nur ein Hinweis auf einen modifizierten Minimalismus bietet, nicht mehr. Wir können vielerlei Adressen ähnlicher Art bei Ligeti finden, aber keine davon weist auf den Kern eines Werks oder gar Ligetis. Der "Kern" ist das verschmitzte Spiel der Wandlungen, denen wir uns in diesem Buch zuwenden.

György Ligeti is a composer whose stance always extended into a multidimensional field. The old and the new in music, or, more generally, artistic and scientific thinking as a whole, were his closest and most inspiring companions and everything new had to be further developed. Yet for him, nothing could be really new without a deep relationship with the old. And the power of the old had to be woven into every new idea. This necessity to subsume what came before into all things new was also his "torture rack". His students in Hamburg experienced this great seeker, this indeed desperate seeker in a most intense way. And he imbued upon us the extreme necessity of taking the next steps, and challenged us to participate and challenged us as, in a great game, to join in the search. A great many of György Ligeti's students collaborated on this book. The result is a colorful bouquet of articles, some of which provide astonishing insights into the person, the teacher, the composer György Ligeti, and all in all include many aspects that would scarcely be accessible to a musicologist coming from outside this inner circle.

Aliute Mecys ist eine große, bisher ziemlich unbekannte Hamburger Malerin, die nach und nach eine immer tiefere Beziehung zu Litauen gewann. Sie wurde am 4. April 1943 in Koblenz als Kind einer deutschen Mutter und eines litauischen Vaters geboren und starb 2013 in Hamburg. Sie spielt mit den Möglichkeiten und den "Spielen" des Sehens, und genau das sehe ich bei ihr als primär an, und gar nicht die Komponente einer persönlichen "Schreckensdarstellung". Diese erscheint nur auf einer ersten Oberfläche unseres Sehens. Mecys hat sich immer wieder in diese Richtung geäußert: "Was ich male, ist für mich nicht makaber. Für mich ist das ganz real. Für mich sind das keine Erfindungen. Ich denke viel in Bildern, und ich sehe bildhaft vor mir, was ich höre oder lese." Ich nehme Mecys gewissermaßen als sehr menschliches, sehr schmerzliches Beispiel für den heutigen Zusammenbruch aller liebgewordenen Klarheiten über unser Weltverständnis, und gleichzeitig auch für die Notwendigkeit, uns neu zu positionieren. Das betrifft unsere Sinne (Maturana) und das betrifft unser Weltkonzept (Lyotard). Beide haben für mich auch miteinander zu tun, und sie erklären den Freiheitsdrang von Mecys: Jean-François Lyotard sieht - und fordert letztlich - die Befreiung von alten ideologischen Denkmustern Europas. Humberto Maturana sieht ganz ähnlich das Zusammenbrechen einer alten Vorstellung, nämlich dass die Welt draußen kalt vor uns steht und wir deren Idee nur entblättern müssten. Im Gegenteil sind wir für ihn als Beobachter selbst die Erbauer der Welt. Durch Lyotard und Maturana können wir einen philosophisch-gesellschaftlichen und einen wissenschaftlich-psychologischen Zugang zu Aliute Mecys finden.

Reading Song Lyrics offers the first systematic introduction to lyrics as a vibrant genre of (performed) literature. It takes lyrics seriously as a complex form of verbal art that has been unjustly neglected in literary, music, and, to a lesser degree, cultural studies, partly as it cuts squarely across institutional boundaries. The first part of this book accordingly introduces a thoroughly transdisciplinary interpretive framework. It outlines theoretical approaches to issues such as performance and performativity, generic convention and cultural capital, sound and songfulness, mediality and musical multimedia, and step by step applies them to the example of a single song. The second part then offers three extended case studies which showcase the larger cultural and historical viability of this model. Probing into the relationship between lyrics and the ambivalent performance of national culture in Britain, it offers exemplary readings of a highly subversive 1597 ayre by John Dowland, of an 1811 broadside ballad about Sara Baartman, ‘The Hottentot Venus’, and of a 2000 song by ‘jungle punk’ collective Asian Dub Foundation. Reading Song Lyrics demonstrates how and why song lyrics matter as a paradigmatic art form in the culture of modernity.
