Buku ini berisi pengetahuan dasar tentang ilmu tanah berdasarkan kaca mata ilmu teknik sipil yang biasa disebut mekanika tanah. Pemahaman tentang mekanika tanah sangat penting untuk perencanaan bangunan geoteknik dimana tanah diharapkan mampu menahan beban bangunan yang ada di atasnya. Pada Bab I pada buku ini menjelaskan pengertian mekanika tanah dan hubungannya dengan ilmu geologi dan bidang keilmuan lainnya. Karena tanah terbentuk dari batuan dan begitu juga sebaliknya maka Bab II bercerita tentang siklus batuan dan tipe batuan yang mungkin menjadi dasar perletakan pondasi bangunan. Pada Bab III mulai dijelaskan bagaimana merencanakan penyelidikan tanah untuk kepentingan perencanaan bangunan. Mulai Bab IV sampai Bab VII akan dibahas secara rinci karakteristik tanah yang dimulai dengan sifat fisik tanah (Bab IV), penamaan tanah berdasarkan material pembentuk dan sifat utama yang mempengaruhinya (Bab V). Sifat mekanis tanah yang sangat menentukan untuk mengetahui kemampuan tanah menahan beban akan dibahas di Bab VI dan VII. Bab VIII membahas lebih lanjut tentang sifat tanah yang dialiri oleh air dimana analisisnya berguna dalam perencanaan bangunan air.

Setiap bangunan sipil terdiri dari dua bagian yaitu, bagian konstruksi yang ada di atas permukaan tanah (upperstructure') dan bagian konstruksi yang ada di bawah permukaan tanah (substructure). Bagian konstruksi di atas permukaan tanah dapat dikatakan tidak berhubungan dengan masalah mekanika tanah. Tetapi, bagian konstruksi di bawah permukaan tanah sangat erat hubungannya dengan mekanika tanah, karena setiap bangunan pasti akan bertumpu di atas fondasi sebagai bangunan penyangga bangunan atas. Supaya dapat berfungsi dengan baik, fondasi harus memiliki daya dukung yang cukup dan apabila terjadi penurunan (settlement) tidak akan membahayakan bangunan. Selain permasalahan daya dukung, untuk bangunan basah (bangunan yang berhubungan dengan air) perlu dipahami juga permasalahan yang berkaitan dengan aliran air dalam tanah, sehingga hal-hal yang berkaitan penggrogosan dan pelongsoran tanah dapatdihindari. Buku Mekanika Tanah: Teori, Soal, dan Penyelesaian ini disusun bagi para mahasiswa Teknik Sipil agar mampu memahami persoalan mekanika tanah, sehingga bisa memecahkan masalah dalam merencanakan/membangun bangunan sipil.
