This book is primarily intended for beginners and practitioners of Carnatic music, which is the type of classical music common to Southern India. In this book we will look at the underlying structure of Carnatic music, which defines a methodology for Melakarta ("janya" or "parent") ragas and from which other janya ("derived" or "child") ragas are derived. In the Carnatic system, there are 72 Melakarta ragas, which are all derived from a 12 note-based system. All Melakarta ragas utilize a distinct set of seven notes ("sapta swara"), in both the arohanam (ascending) sequence and in the avarohanam (descending) sequence. Janya ragas are derived from these Melakarta ragas and have variations such as fewer notes and pattern variations. Where the notes of a janya raga zig and zag, it is called a vakra ("crooked") raga. This variability and flexibility produce the potential to create thousands of ragas. We will focus primarily on Melakarta ragas, and show a new "matrix method" to understand these ragas in an intuitive and visual manner. This will help cement the underlying structure of each Melakarta raga, and also show their pattern difference when compared to other Melakarta ragas. As janya ragas depend on the architecture of the corresponding Melakarta raga, this method will help fix the connectivity between the Melakarta and janya ragas.

Structure And Synthesis written by Mark Fell and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-03-01 with Art categories.

An anthology of pioneer sound artist Mark Fell's work charting his defiantly unorthodox thinking on time, structure, technology, and the relation between academic and popular electronic music. In this extensive anthology, Mark Fell, a pioneering artist known for his sound installations and his musical work solo and as part of SND and Sensate Focus, assembles a collection of diverse materials charting his defiantly unorthodox thinking on time, structure, technology, and the relation between academic and popular electronic music. An amalgam of workbook and manifesto, featuring a collection of interleaved statements, diagrammatic scores, and instructional texts, Structure and Synthesis is a direct engagement with Fell's original thinking and his continual provocations in regard to "experimental" music. Alongside reflections on theory and practice, the volume includes exercises for dismantling musical expertise, habits, and intuitions, documenting Fell's explorations of the peripheries of rhythm, shape, and time in perception and performance. Long-term collaborator designer Joe Gilmore provides a striking graphic context for Fell's evolving thinking and the methods and structures he has developed through his solo and collaborative work.

Music And Musical Thought In Early India written by Lewis Rowell and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992-10-15 with Music categories.

Offering a broad perspective of the philosophy, theory, and aesthetics of early Indian music and musical ideology, this study makes a unique contribution to our knowledge of the ancient foundations of India's musical culture. Lewis Rowell reconstructs the tunings, scales, modes, rhythms, gestures, formal patterns, and genres of Indian music from Vedic times to the thirteenth century, presenting not so much a history as a thematic analysis and interpretation of India's magnificent musical heritage. In Indian culture, music forms an integral part of a broad framework of ideas that includes philosophy, cosmology, religion, literature, and science. Rowell works with the known theoretical treatises and the oral tradition in an effort to place the technical details of musical practice in their full cultural context. Many quotations from the original Sanskrit appear here in English translation for the first time, and the necessary technical information is presented in terms accessible to the nonspecialist. These features, combined with Rowell's glossary of Sanskrit terms and extensive bibliography, make Music and Musical Thought in Early India an excellent introduction for the general reader and an indispensable reference for ethnomusicologists, historical musicologists, music theorists, and Indologists.

Word Sound Image written by Saskia Kersenboom and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-08-25 with Social Science categories.

This original and radical book challenges dominant parameters of literacy by comparing the oral tradition of the Tamils in South India with the Western culture of printed text. In India, traditional texts are always performed; as a result, form and meaning can change depending on the occasion. This is the opposite of Western communication through publication which is a static representation of knowledge. The author examines the reasons for the differences between the Indian and Western textual traditions, and describes how text lives through the performing arts of words, sound and imagery. She argues that interactive multimedia is the first Western communication form to represent oral traditions effectively.
