-서문;슬픔을 견디는 방법 움직이는 투명한 꿈이다. 터널에서 빠져 나오자 순간적으로 햇살이 만물 속에 갇혀버렸다. 그것은 세상이 되었고 감정에 물든다. 그러자 슬픔이 내내 따라온다. 알 수 없는 바다 가운데 놓인 것은 미지의 감정으로 채워진 마음에 있다. 이미 벗어날 수 없다는 것을 알게 되자 슬픔은 성장하며 계속 따라온다. 쓸쓸한 항해는 끝내야만 했다. 이윽고 고스란히 담긴 기억의 바다에서 끝없는 항해는 희망적 두려움으로 암흑과 푸른색을 반복했다. 투명한 마음과 투명한 바람결에 스치는 건조하고 딱딱한 감정이 중첩된 곳에 푹 파인 상처가 자국을 남긴다. 그래서 감정이란 기억은 슬픔을 더해준다. 텅 빈시선은 슬픔의 무덤이 된다. 완전한 휴식의 자투리를 넘겨받은 곳에서 투명한 마음이 널브러져 있다. 그것자체로 마음은 그곳에서 나와 마주하며 무의식의 바다를 건너고 있다. 많은 감정이 곳곳에은둔하고 잠겨있고 사라지다 한다. 유달리 독하고 사나운 마음 한구석이 몰고 오는 파장은 마음을 통째로삼킨다. 그러자 개입하지 않고 울음에 젖지 않고 암흑속에서 TV를 보고있다. 장르는 슬픔이다. -책 속에서 언어는 밤으로 들어가 깊은 전율을 퍼지게 하고 교태를 부린다. 은행나무는 다 보고 있었다. 언어는 고스란히 나무속으로 흡수된다. 누군가에게는 말하지 못한 고백처럼 쓸쓸한 언어가 맴돈다. 떠나가지 못한 누군가의 마음으로 들어간다. 밤의 색을 흡수해 사물의 색깔과 달빛으로 열기를 비춘다. 배경과 언어가 마주하자 다시 혼란 속이다. (불멸의 밤이고 불멸의 우리가 있다 중) 삶이 주는 느낌은 명상과 같은 곳에 머물게 하는 공간에서 나와 마주하게 된다. 움직이는 감정의 소리는 마음 건너편에서 욕심 없이 자신을 보게 될 때 평온을 느낀다. 우연의 사건 속에 고뇌는 필연처럼 나를 연습시키는 도구로 쓰인다. 많은 입자가 형태를 갖추기 위해 움직인다. 하나로 이루어진 평화를 이해하게 되는 다른 방편일지도 모른다. (삶이 고뇌라고 말하면 중) 과거의 기억이 현 재로 돌아와 평행선상에서 나란히 서 있다. 시간과 공간 안에서 서로가 추파를 던지고 우열의 줄다리기는 무의식 속에 도망치듯 사라지는 것도 빠르다. 그렇게 달아난다. 누군가의 소리는 고요처럼 공간을 차지하기까지는 약간의 초조와 불안을 붙인다. 새벽녘 별빛처럼 잠들다가 사라지는 간격을 가지게 된다. (모든 시간과 감정이 장식품처럼 진열된다. 중) 생각의 질료에 따라 암흑이거나 빛의 구간이기도 한 그대에게 향한 통로다. 정신이라는 우주 속, 그대의 정신이라는 우주 속, 나의 문, 그대의 문이자, 텅 빈 시선의 무념이고 무상이 된다. 끝이자, 시작이고, 혼란이고, 질서가 된다. 나의 세계 속 너머 끝의 언저리에 누군가의 시선이 머문다. (끝없이 펼쳐진 무한한 마음에게 중) 내 안의 존재는 오랜 꿈을 꾸는 사이에 마법처럼 일어나 나에게 꽃으로 피어 있는 내면에서 꿈틀거리는 내가 있다. 그것은 언제 투명하게 나를 향해 있었다. 깊은 그 모든 이야기의 시작은 나에게로 와서 나에게로 향했다. 내면의 깊은 곳에 자리한 영혼의 울림이 퍼지고 있다. 내가 마주하는 모든 것 속에 스며들어 함께 일어나고 있다. 없는 듯 있고, 있는 듯 없는 것 같지만, 멈춘 기억 속에도 나는 나인 채로 나였다. (깊고 고요한 내면을 산책하다 보면 중) 하늘을 떠다니던 구름이 마음을 구경하러 몰려들었다. 시선을 떼고 초점 없이 횡단보도에 사람들이 마음의 고단함과 함께 도로 위를 건너고 있다. 뒤따라 바람이 가고 햇빛도 밀어주는 정지한 차들이 순간을 아주 짧게, 느리게, 길게,신호등에 대기한다. 멀리 산은 졸고 있고 바람은 가벼운 무리로 리듬을 타고 몰려와 수다 한바탕으로 멀어져 간다. (두 간격만이 순간 속에 멈춘다. 중) 깊어진 한곳의 마음이 어둠 속 상상은 온갖 버려진 쓰레기를 만들고 소란을 피운다. 은닉한 욕망은 서랍장에 들어가 숨었다. 환희를 맘껏 느껴도 된다. 어둠 속에서 보이지 않는 얼굴을 대고 포개진 상상이 모든 곳을 접촉한다. 아름다운 갈채로 퍼진다. 사이를 번갈아 맞이하는 슬픔이 되었다가 기쁨이 되기도 했다. 이익에만 붙어 있던 착각이 조각난다. 조각난 모든 것들은 금세 사라지고 없다. 그러다 그 조각난기억을 마주하면 환희가 된다. (창 밖에 몽상 중) 우리는 비슷한 차림으로 여전히 뜨거운 감정에 물들어 있었다. 그것 또한 깨지기 쉽고 보호받고 싶은 우리가 그곳에 있다. 슬프기도 했다가, 기쁘기도 한 꿈을 꾸는 여러 기억의 층으로 올라탄다. 순간마다 간격의 수천, 수억 개의 상실된 기억의 한 알이 퉁겨져 온다. 그러다 다시 순간으로 달려들다가, 멈추다 어떤 상태에 돌변하는 표정 속에 있다. 상실의 퍼즐 조각이 감정의 파도를 탄다. (멜랑콜리한 순간 중)감정이 멜로디처럼 퍼진다. 상황에 따라 인식되는 슬픔이 비애가 되고 기쁨이 행복이 된다. 삶은 인식 되는 곳에서 처음 어떤 성가신 리듬은 타고 소란하고 고단한 삶이 곳곳에 있다. 이내 여행자처럼 방황하다가 영혼이 심장 안으로 들어와 그림자처럼 달라붙는다. 스티커로 표시해둔 그림자는 각양각색의 형태를 띠며 모든 것의 의심을 거둔다. 그래야 하기에 수호신처럼 있다. 형체의 모든 것들을 보호해주는 수호신을 그림자 스티커로 붙여 놓은 것 같다. (영혼을 치유하는 곳 중)

Today, teachers and performers of Turkish classical music intentionally cultivate melancholies, despite these affects being typically dismissed as remnants of the Ottoman Empire. Melancholic Modalities is the first in-depth historical and ethnographic study of the practices socialized by musicians who enthusiastically teach and perform a present-day genre substantially rooted in the musics of the Ottoman court and elite Mevlevi Sufi lodges. Author Denise Gill analyzes how melancholic music-making emerges as pleasurable, spiritually redeeming, and healing for both the listener and performer. Focusing on the diverse practices of musicians who deploy and circulate melancholy in sound, Gill interrogates the constitutive elements of these musicians' modalities in the context of emergent neoliberalism, secularism, political Islamism, Sufi devotionals, and the politics of psychological health in Turkey today. In an essential contribution to the study of ethnomusicology and psychology, Gill develops rhizomatic analyses to allow for musicians' multiple interpretations to be heard. Melancholic Modalities uncovers how emotion and musical meaning are connected, and how melancholy is articulated in the world of Turkish classical musicians. With her innovative concept of "bi-aurality," Gill's book forges new possibilities for the historical and ethnographic analyses of musics and ideologies of listening for music scholars.
