The Lightness Of Being written by Frank Wilczek and has been published by Penguin UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-06-04 with Science categories.

What's the meaning of it all? Or rather: what exactly is 'it'? Here Frank Wilczek, Nobel Prize-winning physicist and legend, examines the very nature of reality itself, showing how almost everything we think we know about 'it' is wrong. The Lightness of Being is an engaging tour de force, revealing a universe where matter is the hum of strange music, mass doesn't weigh, and empty space is a multilayered, multicoloured superconductor. Physicists' understanding of the essential nature of reality changed radically over the past quarter century. And Frank Wilczek has played a lead role in establishing the new paradigms. Transcending the clash and mismatch of older ideas about what matter and space is, Wilczek presents some brilliant and clear syntheses. Extraordinarily readable and authoritative, The Lightness of Being is the first book to unwrap these exciting new ideas for the general public. It explores their implications for basic questions about space, mass, energy, and the longed-for possibility of a fully unified theory of Nature. Pointing to new directions where great discoveries in fundamental physics are likely, and providing a visionary context for the experiments in CERN, he envisions a new Golden Age in physics.

Scientists act within a social context and from a philosophical perspective that is inherently political. Whether they realize it or not, scientists always choose sides. The Dialectical Biologist explores this political nature of scientific inquiry, advancing its argument within the framework of Marxist dialectic. These essays stress the concepts of continual change and codetermination between organism and environment, part and whole, structure and process, science and politics. Throughout, this book questions our accepted definitions and biases, showing the self-reflective nature of scientific activity within society.

The Craft Of Sociology written by Pierre Bourdieu and has been published by Walter de Gruyter this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991 with Philosophy categories.

The work of the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu has emerged, over the last two decades, as one of the most substantial and innovative bodies of theory and research in contemporary social science. The Craft of Sociology, both a textbook and an original contribution to epistemology in social science, focuses on a basic problem of sociological research: the necessity of an epistemological break with the preconstructed objects social practice offers to the researcher. Pierre Bourdieu and his co-authors argue in the epistemological tradition of scholars like Bachelard, Canguilhem, Koyre, a tradition that identifies the construction of the object as being the fundamental scientific act. Their way of discussing the issue makes it accessible not only to academics and experts of epistemology, but also to advanced students of social science, using for illustration a wide range of texts from the various social sciences as well as from philosophy of science. The book includes an interview with Pierre Bourdieu and an introduction by the editor to his sociological methodology.

The Parliament of Man is the first definitive history of the United Nations, from one of America's greatest living historians.Distinguished scholar Paul Kennedy, author of the bestselling The Rise and Fall of Great Powers, gives us a thorough and timely account that explains the UN's roots and functions while also casting an objective eye on its effectiveness and its prospects for success in meeting the challenges that lie ahead. Kennedy shows the UN for what it is: fallible, human-based, often dependent on the whims of powerful national governments or the foibles of individual administrators—yet also utterly indispensable. With his insightful grasp of six decades of global history, Kennedy convincingly argues that "it is difficult to imagine how much more riven and ruinous our world of six billion people would be if there had been no UN."

Steel and its Heat Treatment: Bofors Handbook describes the fundamental metallographic concepts, materials testing, hardenability, heat treatment, and dimensional changes that occur during the hardening and tempering stages of steel. The book explains the boundaries separating the grain contents of steel, which are the low-angle grain boundaries, the high-angle grain boundaries, and the twinning boundaries. Engineers can determine the hardenability of steel through the Grossman test or the Jominy End-Quench test. Special hardening and tempering methods are employed for steel that are going to be fabricated into tools. The different methods of hardening are manual hardening for a small surface (the tip of a screw); spin hardening for objects with a rotational symmetry (gears with 5 modules or less); and progressive hardening (or a combination with spin hardening) for flat surfaces. The hardening and tempering processes cause changes in size and shape of the substance. The text presents examples of dimensional changes during the hardening and tempering of tool steels such as those occurring in plain-carbon steels and low-alloy steels. The book is a source of reliable information needed by engineers, tool and small equipment designers, as well as by metallurgists, structural, and mechanical engineers.
