Este livro é resultado de aproximadamente três décadas de pesquisas realizadas por esse autor e o projeto nasceu de um ideal: deixar registrada para as gerações futuras a história de um povo, narrando os fatos, com uma linguagem simples e com base em fartos documentos das respectivas épocas, e outros registros existentes, além de ampla memória oral de personagens que vivenciaram e fizeram o passado no município. Nestes termos, na égide desta obra, tive um amplo olhar sobre os acontecimentos históricos de São João da Canabrava, resultado glorioso de tantos homens e mulheres ilustres desta terra, que por largos tempos cultivaram obras valorosas numa odisseia em efervescência resplandecente, distante de ser um somatório de fatos isolados, cujos nomes figuram nos anais gloriosos dessa linda história. A obra está dividida em dez capítulos, trazendo como temáticas a colonização inicial, as grandes secas, a passagem da Coluna Prestes, a evolução comercial e urbana, religião e educação, evolução política e administrativa, genealogias de famílias, além de um breve histórico dos principais povoados do município. Os leitores julgarão este trabalho, feito com muita responsabilidade, amor, dedicação, com a preocupação de não errar, embora entenda que involuntárias falhas e omissões irão constar. Por elas, apresento minhas antecipadas desculpas. É importante lembrar que não escrevi sozinho a História de São João da Canabrava, pois, esta história vem sendo escrita todos os dias, desde os primórdios de sua colonização, por todos aqueles que aqui viveram e vivem, lutaram e lutam pelas causas e conquistas importantes desta cidade, que nasceu sob a proteção de São João Batista, modelo de um profeta com grande popularidade e padroeiro da amizade, referenciando assim o lugar de um povo trabalhador, amigo e hospitaleiro. Enfim, é um livro para se refletir uma cidade, as suas memórias, sua evolução social, política, cultural e econômica, seus erros e acertos, uma mistura de tudo, de rememoração e de ciências humanas.

When Brazil's 'golden age' began, the Portuguese were securely established on the coast and immediate hinterland. European rivals - Spanish, French, Dutch - had been repelled, and expansion into the vast interior had begun. By the end of the 'golden age', bandleirantes, missionaries, miners, planters and ranchers had penetrated deep into the continent. In 1750, by the Treaty of Madrid, Spain recognized Brazil's new frontiers. The colony had come to occupy an area slightly greater than that of the ten Spanish colonies in South America put together. Despite conflicts, the fusion of Portuguese, Amerindian and African into a Brazilian entity had begun; and the explosive expansion of Brazil had laid the foundation for the independence that followed in 1822. Professor Boxer deals not only with the turbulent events of the 'golden age' but analyses the economic and administrative changes of the period. He examines the relationships of officials with colonists, of settlers with Indians, of colony with mother country. Professor Boxer's classic study of a critical period in the growth of Brazil (the world's fifth largest country) has long been out of print. It is here reissued with numerous illustrations.

Freedom by a Thread: The History of Quilombos in Brazil brings together some of the best scholars in the world working on the history of quilombos (maroon societies) in Brazil from a variety of perspectives and approaches. Over 40 percent of the total volume of captive Africans arrived in Brazil during a 400-year period of legal and contraband transatlantic slaving. If slavery penetrated every aspect of Brazilian life, so did resistance—and co-existence with it—in the form of small to large-scale quilombos. Palmares and the other quilombos built an exciting history of freedom. Yet, it is a history filled with traps and surprises, advances and setbacks, conflict and commitments, while advancing their immediate interests and more ambitious projects of liberty.
