Ilmu Kesejahteraan Sosial sebagai pengetahuan sistematis dan praktis, secara khusus membahas isu kesejahteraan dan upaya-upaya yang dilakukan untuk mencapai kesejahteraan bagi seluruh masyarakat. Dilihat dari dasar keilmuannya, Ilmu Kesejahteraan Sosial mempunyai dasar keilmuan sosial atau ‘basic social sciences’, yakni psikologi dan sosiologi. Kedua disiplin ilmu ini menyumbang banyak kajian dalam mempelajari Ilmu Kesejahteraan Sosial, meskipun ilmu lainnya, seperti antropologi, ekonomi, politik, pendidikan, dan ilmu sosial lainnya juga menjadi bagian yang integral dan tidak dapat dikesampingkan. Sementara, dari sisi epistemologi, Ilmu Kesejahteraan Sosial memiliki akar epistemologi yang kuat dari usaha kesejahteraan sosial atau pekerjaan sosial. Dalam hal ini, praktik dari Ilmu Kesejahteraan Sosial adalah praktik atau intervensi terkait dengan usaha kesejahteraan sosial atau pekerjaan sosial. Sebagai ilmu praktis, Ilmu Kesejahteraan Sosial tidak bermakna apa-apa jikalau hanya dipelajari tanpa melakukan npraktik intervensi atau penanganan masalah sosial, yang dapat ditujukan bagi individu, kelompok, masyarakat, dan bangsa, sebagai bentuk penerapan atau implementasi dari teori yang ada. The author asks why people do not forget their national identity. He suggests that in daily life nationalism is constantly flagged in the media through routine symbols and habits of language. Banal Nationalism is critical of orthodox theories in sociology, politics and social psychology for ignoring this core feature of national identity.
