Memento mori is a broad and understudied cultural phenomenon and experience. The term “memento mori” is a Latin injunction that means “remember mortality,” or more directly, “remember that you must die.” In art and cultural history, memento mori appears widely, especially in medieval folk culture and in the well-known Dutch still life vanitas paintings of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Yet memento mori extends well beyond these points in art and cultural history. In Death in Documentaries: The Memento Mori Experience, Benjamin Bennett-Carpenter suggests that documentaries are an especially apt form of contemporary memento mori. Bennett-Carpenter shows that documentaries may offer composed transformative experiences in which a viewer may renew one’s consciousness of mortality – and thus renew one’s life.

Davor haben sie mehr Angst als vor dem Tod als Endgültigkeit. Der Tod gilt als größte und letzte Kränkung der Menschheit, er ist das Negativste am Leben. Eine ganz andere Sichtweise vertritt Wilhelm Schmid in seinem Buch „Philosophie der Lebenskunst“ in dem Kapitel „Äußerste Sorge: Vom Leben mit dem Tod“. Wir sollten lernen, den Tod nicht als unseren Todfeind zu betrachten, sagt Schmid: „Nur was irgendwann aufhört, ist auch schön und kostbar.“ In dieser Hausarbeit über „Das Memento Mori als Lebenskunst“, geht es darum herauszufinden, was der Tod in dem Leben eines Menschen bedeutet, warum ihm solch eine Macht zugeschrieben wird, welche nicht selten als überwältigende Angst wahrgenommen wird. Unterschiedliche Meinungen werden aus verschiedenen Blickwinkeln betrachtet und interpretiert. Wie wird der Tod in anderen Kulturen verstanden? Es wird beschrieben, wie in der heutigen Hast der Zeit die Gesellschaft mit dem Tod lebt. Kritisch wird auf die Tatsache eingegangen, dass der Tod in unserer Gesellschaft entmenschlicht, zum Verwaltungsakt degradiert wird und einem somit nicht mehr die Möglichkeit bietet, aus ihm zu lernen. Konflikte über die Definition des Begriffs der Euthanasie sowie die Auseinandersetzung mit der Sterbehilfe werden angeschnitten. Fragen über positive Erfahrungen mit dem Tod werden aufgeworfen. Was bedeutet es, mit jemandem mitzusterben, und welche Bedeutung kann eine solche Erfahrung für ein Leben haben? Und welche besondere Beziehung haben eigentlich alte Menschen zu Neugeborenen? Die Hauptgrundlage für diese Arbeit bildet das Buch von Wilhelm Schmid „Philosophie der Lebenskunst. Eine Grundlegung“ (1998), darin das Kapitel: „Äußerste Sorge: Vom Leben mit dem Tod“. Veranschaulicht werden Schmids Beschreibungen durch Zitate aus der Sterbebiografie von Mitch Albom, „Dienstags bei Morrie“. Durch die lebensnahen, ungeschminkten Gespräche zwischen dem todkranken Professor Morrie Schwartz und seinem ehemaligen Studenten Mitch Albom wird das Thema des Todes in den Alltag geholt. Weiter verwendet wird der Text von Klaus Feldmann „Tod und Gesellschaft. Sozialwissenschaftliche Thanatologie im Überblick“.
