The Memoir of a Very Naughty Boy is a graphic description of a boy's life in post-WW2 Perth and various West Australian rural settings with a refined and delicate mother and an alcoholic war trauma affected father who didn't warm to him. This prizewinning book covers the period from his birth in 1940 to 1959. It was granted the second prize in the inaugural Geoffrey Bolton Award for Life in Vincent given by the City of Vincent Library in Leederville, an inner Perth suburb in its Local History Awards 2016. The author spent seven years during his primary schooling at North Perth School within the City of Vincent. The judges of the competition for which cash prizes were given said in their reasons for granting the award: ..."the memoir impressed ...by its brutal honesty. This engagingly written memoir from childhood to late teens provides a valuable document of life in the working class suburbs. It also documents the effects on families of fathers who came home from the war with mental health issues which caused drinking problems. Despite the adversity this very personal story is told with a sense of humour." The author, a dilatory student at school, but a voracious reader in many subjects, went on to become a Walkley Award winning journalist, foreign policy editor and diplomat who served in Indonesia as Cultural Attache and in India as Consul General Bombay and Counsellor (Public Affairs) New Delhi before retiring to live in rural India for nine years with his partner. The author who was plagued with horrendous nightmares until the age of 25, says it took sixty years and many attempts before he was able to achieve sufficient mental detachment to write this memoir about his painful and violent childhood. Now aged 78 and the author of the novel The Bird of Time, published in 2016, Gavan Bromilow lives in Mandurah south of Perth but spends part of each year in India with his partner of 30 years, Dr Chanda Nimbkar, an internationally distinguished livestock geneticist and animal breeder.

I had the fortune of spending my childhood in a small Brazilian town, Monlevade, and in Luxembourg. Our experiences had a unique flavor, enabled by our freedom and explorations. The small events are left out in order to carve, as if in marble, a statue that aggrandizes the accomplishments. My inspiration for this much more modest book comes from Roald Dahl, whose fascinating books I read to my granddaughters until they outgrew the stories. His book 'Boy' caused a deep impression in me and I realized that his sentence about life being composed of a great number of small incidents and a small number of great ones has great depth. So, I built a semblance of his yellow house in my backyard and proceeded to write the accounts of my childhood, mixing funny, happy, and not so happy stories. Children have a special place in life, and we often forget about their actions and aspirations in our quest for serious, grownup activities. I hope that it will entertain you for a few hours and make you forget the stress of grownup life. Don't take the actions of these little boys too seriously. Children have a special way of looking at life. Their pranks are the result of their curiosity and creativity. They look at adults and cannot comprehend fully their behavior. When we leave childhood, we step into the adult world, more stressed and less funny. This book will not cross this Rubicon.
