Excerpt from Memoir of Margaret Swan Cheney Margaret Swan Cheney was the only child of Seth Wells and Ednah Dow Cheney. She was born in the old homestead at South Manchester, Sept. 8, 1855. Very soon after her father's death we returned to Boston, and lived at No. 94 Chestnut Street. The child's pet name was Daisy. We had been in France just before her birth, where Marguerite is the common name of that flower. She was a very sweet, engaging child, loving and affectionate, easily managed, and with very quick perceptions. Once or twice when very young she showed a power of reading others' thoughts by speaking aloud words which were in my mind, but which could have no meaning to her. Excerpt from Memoir of Margaret Stephen Kennedy Towards the close of this volume my readers will find a touching tribute to Mrs. Kennedy's memory from Ram Chandra Bose, ma. As I send this work to the press information has reached me of his death in his sixtieth year. I mourn his departure. There was no native of India to whom I was more warmly attached, and whom I had more reason to regard as one of my most affectionate friends. In the Harvest Field for July, a missionary periodical published at Madras, I find a sketch of his life. I transcribe a few sentences from it. Memoirs written by Marie Mancini and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-05-15 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

The memoirs of Hortense (1646–1699) and of Marie (1639–1715) Mancini, nieces of the powerful Cardinal Mazarin and members of the court of Louis XIV, represent the earliest examples in France of memoirs published by women under their own names during their lifetimes. Both unhappily married—Marie had also fled the aftermath of her failed affair with the king—the sisters chose to leave their husbands for life on the road, a life quite rare for women of their day. Through their writings, the Mancinis sought to rehabilitate their reputations and reclaim the right to define their public images themselves, rather than leave the stories of their lives to the intrigues of the court—and to their disgruntled ex-husbands. First translated in 1676 and 1678 and credited largely to male redactors, the two memoirs reemerge here in an accessible English translation that chronicles the beginnings of women’s rights to personal independence within the confines of an otherwise circumscribed early modern aristocratic society.

Good Strategy Bad Strategy written by Richard Rumelt and has been published by Profile Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-06-09 with Business & Economics categories.

When Richard Rumelt's Good Strategy/Bad Strategy was published in 2011, it immediately struck a chord, calling out as bad strategy the mish-mash of pop culture, motivational slogans and business buzz speak so often and misleadingly masquerading as the real thing. Since then, his original and pragmatic ideas have won fans around the world and continue to help readers to recognise and avoid the elements of bad strategy and adopt good, action-oriented strategies that honestly acknowledge the challenges being faced and offer straightforward approaches to overcoming them. Strategy should not be equated with ambition, leadership, vision or planning; rather, it is coherent action backed by an argument. For Rumelt, the heart of good strategy is insight into the hidden power in any situation, and into an appropriate response - whether launching a new product, fighting a war or putting a man on the moon. Drawing on examples of the good and the bad from across all sectors and all ages, he shows how this insight can be cultivated with a wide variety of tools that lead to better thinking and better strategy, strategy that cuts through the hype and gets results.

Acoustic Rooster calls on friends like pianist Duck Ellington, singer Bee Holiday, and percussionist piggy Pepe Ernesto Cruz. Together, the foursome makes beautiful music as they rock the barnyard. And while they may not win first prize, Acoustic Rooster realizes he has the world's best jazz band and that's all that matters. "This book is the result of a study in which the authors identified all of the American women who earned PhD's in mathematics before 1940, and collected extensive biographical and bibliographical information about each of them. By reconstructing as complete a picture as possible of this group of women, Green and LaDuke reveal insights into the larger scientific and cultural communities in which they lived and worked." "The book contains an extended introductory essay, as well as biographical entries for each of the 228 women in the study. The authors examine family backgrounds, education, careers, and other professional activities. They show that there were many more women earning PhD's in mathematics before 1940 than is commonly thought." "The material will be of interest to researchers, teachers, and students in mathematics, history of mathematics, history of science, women's studies, and sociology."--BOOK JACKET.
