The 1967 Summer of Love gave way to the 1968 summer of hell, invaded by hard drugs and predators, and no one wore flowers in their hair anymore. Yet this was when the flames of the awakening burned most brightly. It was also when the media began to take notice. Memoirs of a Jesus Freak, 2nd Edition: 50 chapters, 46 biographies, with many new photos becomes a primary source document for researchers on the Jesus People Movement, an American awakening from 1967 to 1972.

In Memoirs of a Jesus Freak, Kent Philpott tells of going to the hippies in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco in early 1967 and the unusual outpouring of the Holy Spirit with signs and wonders that was the Jesus People Movement. The 1967 Summer of Love gave way to the 1968 summer of hell, invaded by hard drugs and predators, and no one wore flowers in their hair anymore. Yet this was when the flames of the awakening burned most brightly. Perhaps the awakening's first convert was David Hoyt, fresh out of federal prison. Philpott ran with Hoyt out of a burning Hare Krishna Temple on Fredrick Street where Hoyt had been the chief devotee. The two then spent endless hours on the streets of the City, reaching out to youth who were in search of love, sex, enlightenment, and rock and roll. Satanic cults, TM, and Eastern religions, along with a renaissance of occult arts clashed harshly with the old time religion of Jesus Christ and the Bible. In the ensuing intense spiritual warfare, battles were won and lost, yet a form of Christianity took hold with a likeness to the primitive days of the first century Christian Church. New music and new evangelistic techniques invaded local churches, and everyone was talking about Jesus. Contents include 45 chapters, 36 biographies, and 66 photos - a primary source document for researchers on the Jesus People Movement, an American awakening from 1967 to 1972.

The second volume of riveting memoirs from Hans Kung, the leading - and controversial - theologian. Hans Küng has been a major influence on post-war Christianity by any reckoning. A peritus for the second Vatican council, he then went on to publish a number of controversial books, including Infallible? An Enquiry (1971), which enraged the Vatican and caused him to lose the ecclesiastical approval of his teaching at the university of Tübingen. However, he remains a respected priest in good standing with his bishop. Throughout all the upheavals that the Catholic Church has undergone in recent decades, Küng has been an outspoken observer, turning himself from enfant terrible to béte noire. However his world influence has been great. Whether speaking at the United Nations or consorting with politicians and religious leaders, he is always listened to with respect and enthusiasm. A string of recent books has added to his reputation-notably On Being a Christian (1974) and Does God Exist? An Answer for Today (1980) What is not so well known is that, as a young man, Küng was a close friend and confidant of Joseph Ratzinger (Benedict XVI). Over the years, however, they increasingly came to represent exactly what the other most despised. On being appointed to the Holy See, Ratzinger had a long private meeting with Küng , the consequences of which may resonate within the Catholic Church for many years. In these thrilling memoirs Küng gives his personal account of all these struggles and ambitions. The result is a book of major importance for any student of the church in the 20th century. This second volume covers the period following the close of the Second Vatican Council right up to the present day.

New York Times bestseller: An “exquisitely wrought memoir” about how “love can flourish even in the harshest climates”—for readers of The Liar’s Club and Running with Scissors (People). This poignant, darkly funny account of two siblings—one white, one Black—growing up in the Christian fundamentalist communities of Indiana and the Dominican Republic is “one of the best memoirs in years” (Anne Lamott, author of Bird by Bird). Julia and her adopted brother, David, are 16 years old. Julia is white. David is black. It is the mid–1980s and their family has just moved to rural Indiana, a landscape of cottonwood trees, trailer parks, and an all–encompassing racism. At home are a distant mother—more involved with her church’s missionaries than her own children—and a violent father. In this riveting and heartrending memoir, Julia Scheeres takes us from the Midwest to a place beyond imagining. Surrounded by natural beauty, Escuela Caribe—a religious reform school in the Dominican Republic—is characterized by a disciplinary regime that extracts repentance from its students by any means necessary. Julia and David strive to make it through these ordeals and their tale is relayed here with startling immediacy, extreme candor, and wry humor. Over a decade after its first publication, Jesus Land remains deeply resonant with readers. This New York Times bestselling memoir is a gripping tale of rage and redemption, hope and humor, morality and malice—and most of all, the truth: that being a good person takes more than just going to church.
