In 1910 Mexicans rebelled against an imperfect dictatorship; after 1940 they ended up with what some called the perfect dictatorship. A single party ruled Mexico for over seventy years, holding elections and talking about revolution while overseeing one of the world's most inequitable economies. The contributors to this groundbreaking collection revise earlier interpretations, arguing that state power was not based exclusively on hegemony, corporatism, or violence. Force was real, but it was also exercised by the ruled. It went hand-in-hand with consent, produced by resource regulation, political pragmatism, local autonomies and a popular veto. The result was a dictablanda: a soft authoritarian regime. This deliberately heterodox volume brings together social historians, anthropologists, sociologists, and political scientists to offer a radical new understanding of the emergence and persistence of the modern Mexican state. It also proposes bold, multidisciplinary approaches to critical problems in contemporary politics. With its blend of contested elections, authoritarianism, and resistance, Mexico foreshadowed the hybrid regimes that have spread across much of the globe. Dictablanda suggests how they may endure. Most accounts of the Spanish transition to democracy have been celebratory exercises at the service of a stabilizing rather than a critical project of far-reaching reform. As one of the essays in this volume puts it, the “pact of oblivion,” which characterized the Spanish transition to democracy, curtailed any serious attempt to address the legacies of authoritarianism that the new democracy inherited from the Franco era. As a result, those legacies pervaded public discourse even in newly created organs of opinion. As another contributor argues, the Transition was based on the erasure of memory and the invention of a new political tradition. On the other hand, memory and its etiolation have been an object of reflection for a number of film directors and fiction writers, who have probed the return of the repressed under spectral conditions. Above all, this book strives to present memory as a performative exercise of democratic agents and an open field for encounters with different, possibly divergent, and necessarily fragmented recollections. The pact of the Transition could not entirely disguise the naturalization of a society made of winners and losers, nor could it ensure the consolidation of amnesia by political agents and by the tools that create hegemony by shaping opinion. Spanish society is haunted by the specters of a past it has tried to surmount by denying it. It seems unlikely that it can rid itself of its ghosts without in the process undermining the democracy it sought to legitimate through the erasure of memories and the drowning of witnesses' voices in the cacaphony of triumphant modernization.

Il Centro Inter-Universitario in Psicologia dello Sport «Mind in Sport Team» nasce nel 2006 con l’obiettivo di promuovere l’attività di studio, ricerca e applicazione delle conoscenze psicologiche nei contesti dello sport e dell’esercizio fisico, a livello nazionale e internazionale. Il centro vede attualmente la partecipazione di otto differenti Atenei italiani. Sono rappresentate nel Centro le Università degli Studi di Cagliari, Catania, Chieti, Firenze, Roma «Foro Italico», Roma «Sapienza», Trieste, Verona. Le diverse unità di ricerca del Centro perseguono, in modo coordinato, lo studio dei processi psicofisiologici, cognitivi, sociali, emotivi ed affettivi alla base della prestazione sportiva a qualsiasi livello agonistico, nelle diverse condizioni di salute e in ogni fascia di età. Il centro inoltre si occupa dei meccanismi alla base della relazione tra esercizio fisico e benessere. L’attività del centro non si limita al piano della ricerca di base ma identifica, tra i suoi obiettivi sostanziali, la costruzione di programmi applicativi e la valutazione della loro efficacia, la formazione e la supervisione di professionisti in grado di rispondere alle diverse richieste che provengono dal mondo dello sport. Per raggiungere questi obiettivi, tra le sue attività il Centro dal 2007 propone un Master Universitario di II livello in Psicologia dello Sport. Tutti gli autori dei capitoli di questo volume sono docenti del Master.

The Spanish civil war is considered a key point of analysis of the first half of the 1900s because of the peculiar context in which it developed, the ideologies that provoked it and for the controversies that still accompany it. An event of this magnitude has had and continues to have a great resonance in literature; this essay compares two authors at the antipodes, which well summarize the socio-political debate that accompanies the theme: José María Gironella, author close to the regime, and Juan Benet, hermetic writer. The contrast between the motivations and objectives of the two writers is accompanied by incompatible narrative choices. With memory as both a judge and a defendant, the authors open two different paths of communication with the reader: from history to man, from man to history.

I rituali funerari delle società antiche e medievali sono ricchi di piccoli gesti che non possono passare inosservati. Negli ultimi anni, molti ricercatori che si dedicano all’archeologia della morte hanno concentrato la loro attenzione sulla traccia di questi comportamenti, analizzando in dettaglio molti dei materiali rinvenuti nelle sepolture. Monete, gioielli, ceramiche, ossa, cibo e fiori sono alcuni degli oggetti che venivano frequentemente utilizzati per dare l’addio al defunto. L’analisi dettagliata di questi materiali in ampi contesti funerari dimostra che la loro scelta e collocazione nelle tombe era ricca di significati che variavano a seconda delle epoche, delle regioni e delle comunità. Questo volume riflette proprio su questi ultimi aspetti, studiando in dettaglio la scelta, la collocazione e il valore ideologico di piccoli oggetti tradizionalmente associati a concetti ormai superati. È per questo motivo che gran parte dei lavori presenti in questo volume sono dedicati all’analisi delle monete nelle tombe, poiché si tratta di un oggetto utilizzato con una certa frequenza nei riti funerari di varie culture. Accanto a questi studi numismatici, altri contributi sono dedicati all’esame, secondo approcci aggiornati, degli elementi di decorazione e consumo personale in contesti funerari, fornendo così nuovi dati che permettono di ricostruire e di ripensare con maggiore precisione le concezioni della morte in epoca antica e medievale.
