Esta obra busca apontar a diversidade do cristianismo oriental paulistano, debruçando-se sobre as Igrejas Orientais. Essas instituições estão associadas a comunidades imigrantes que vieram para São Paulo desde o final do século XIX até a segunda metade do século XX. Entre os grupos cristãos orientais emigrados para a cidade estão árabes, armênios, gregos, russos e ucranianos. Essas comunidades estão divididas em doze Igrejas localizadas em diversos pontos da região metropolitana. A pesquisa apoia-se em depoimentos coletados entre os membros do clero de cada uma dessas Igrejas, alguns fiéis cristãos orientais da cidade e bibliografia acerca da experiência histórica dessas instituições em outras partes do mundo. Longe de ser algo cristalizado, apresentando Ritos e peculiaridades do antigo cristianismo, as Igrejas Orientais na cidade de São Paulo estão inseridas no dia a dia da metrópole. Essas Igrejas pretendem mediar seu passado, associado com a manutenção da fé e cultura das comunidades imigrantes, e a vivência de sua situação paulistana atual. Uma situação em que a primeira geração de imigrantes diminui devido ao envelhecimento e aos fluxos imigratórios que não se renovam. As Igrejas Orientais, de acordo com os depoimentos de clérigos e fiéis, vivem um momento reflexivo de sua trajetória na metrópole. No entanto, o trabalho não deve julgar qual Igreja preserva melhor o passado, mas compreender que elas fazem parte do cotidiano da cidade. São Igrejas Orientais paulistanas, portanto, sua situação perpassa apropriações que melhor respondem à sua experiência em São Paulo.

Focusing on the Bororo people of west-central Brazil, this book addresses the construction of self-identity through interethnic interaction. By presenting the images the Bororo have of themselves as well as the images of others who have interacted with them, Brazilian anthropologist Sylvia Caiuby Novaes argues convincingly that Bororo self-images are constructed with the aid of a peculiar looking-glass—it is in the images of others that they see themselves. Incorporating contributions from psychology, psychoanalysis, linguistics, and semiotics, Play of Mirrors focuses on symbols, images, discourse, and meanings rather than solely on the problem of acculturation. It thus reflects the thinking of a new generation of Brazilian anthropologists who have shifted their focus from native communities as isolated entities to an examination of their embeddedness within broader national and international arenas.

The Biography includes a Preface by Cuban Commander Fidel Castro Frei Bettos roles as a revolutionary Christian, popular educator, social movement articulator, and journalist/writer provide insight into the political and religious history not only of Brazil, but of Cuba and former socialist countries of Eastern Europe. His lifepath is one of engagement with the revolutionary struggle against the Brazilian military dictatorship in favor of social transformation. His arrest in 1969 for coordinating the safe departure of political militants from Brazil, and his concern to eliminate hunger and suffering from the poorer classes, were strong credentials as he promoted dialogue between political bodies, the religious establishment and the population at large. Strongly influenced by the propositions of Liberation Theology, a defining thread of its activities was to seek an understanding, an accommodation, between Christianity and socialism. Friar Betto maintained close relations with former Brazilian President Lula da Silva and Fidel Castro and the Cuban revolutionary government, and wrote about how the internal dynamics of the Cuban religious universe could be applied to other countries and to different political circumstances. His writings on socialist countries, especially Paradise Lost, are aimed at promoting understanding on several levels: between the Church and the communists; between the military and politicians; between religious leaders and the people. Frei Bettos biography is an invitation to understand five decades of a personal pursuit of revolutionary ideals through the prism of religious tolerance and the pursuit of socialism. The Portuguese edition was a finalist in the biography section of Jabuti the prestigious national literary prize granted by the Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL).
