Excerpt from Memorials of Old Durham In the past the county has been favoured by a succes sion of historians, who have dealt more or less fully with its parochial history. More recently Dr. Lapsley and the contributors to the Victoria History have minutely examined the various phases of its early constitution. In the publications of the local archaeological societies, the greater mansions and most of the more interesting churches have been dealt with in detail. Excerpt from Memorials of William Charles Lake: Dean of Durham; 1869-1894 His undergraduate career was marked especially by the position which he early obtained in the University debating society known as The Union.' Though physically strong and a good rider, he was not at the time of his coming to Oxford an athlete, and neither the river nor the cricket-field seemed to possess for him any attraction. But in intellectual contests he was the keenest possible combatant, bold in attack, skilful in defence, full of vigour, resource, and audacity. In the small private debating society, which bore the name of The Decade, ' and was composed principally of Balliol men, he held a promi nent place; and in the Union, where for several years he took a leading part, he rapidly attained to high distinction. The other foremost speakers of the time were George Trevor, afterwards Sub-dean of York; J. R. Cornish, afterwards Sir J. R. Mowbray, m.p. For the University; Richard Congreve, Scholar of Wad ham (the Positivist); John Duke Coleridge, afterwards Lord Coleridge; Francis Tate, Scholar of University J. F. B. Blackett, student of Christ Church, m.p.; and perhaps I should add my unworthy self, then Fellow of Exeter. Among these Lake, if not facile princeps, at any rate easily held his own, and was an adversary few cared to encounter. He and I had, how ever, occasional passages of arms, to some of which he refers in his own account of his Oxford career. But they were not on points of any great importance, and I think I may say they left no sting behind them. Excerpt from Memorials of St. Giles's, Durham: Being Grassmen's Account and Other Parish Records, Together With Documents Relating to the Hospitals of Kepier and St. Mary Magdalene The Borough of St. Giles is a suburb of the City of Durham, lying between the upper and lower portions of the River Wear, which approaches the city from the East and, after encompassing in a loop the hill on which the Castle and Cathedral stand, flows away towards the East again. The street called Gilligate is between the approaching and retiring streams, being a continuation of Claypath in the parish of St. Nicholas, and beginning where Bakehouse Lane on the one side and the narrow Tinkler's Lane on the other separate the two parishes, and where the Leaden Cross, shown in Speed's map of Durham (see Surtees' "History of Durham," Vol. iv, Part ii, p. 31), formerly stood. Thence the street ascends eastward in two successive acclivities to the summit of the hill on which the church stands, the ground sloping steeply down on each side to the river. The church, so situated, catches the eye of visitors to Durham with a pleasing effect, perhaps suggesting the thought to some of "the decent church that tops the neigh'ring hill." Its modest low tower, according so well with the surrounding scene, has happily been left unchanged by modern restoration. East of "the street" (as Gilligate is often called in the old records) the ancient parish extended far into the adjacent country, including a moor, which comprised, at the time of its enclosure in 1817, about 235 acres. Minds sensible of the fascination of antiquarian research, when on the look-out for antiquities, cannot but long to go back beyond the time at which any definite history of a place begins. Hence, before attempting a sketch of what is historically known for the purpose of elucidating the records now published, it may be interesting to cast a brief glance into the times, so far as can be known or surmised, before there was any suburb of a city, or city at all, in the locality. Excerpt from New Hampshire, Lake Region Inscriptions: Whiteface Intervale, Sandwich; Perkins Ground, New Durham; Further Memorials of Meredith As the day waned the chill increased until it became really cold, and we began to experience the effects of one of those sharp changes in the weather so characteristic of New England, but which are especially marked among the mountains. Just at sunset we started on our four - mile drive, behind a fine span that maintained an even pace, up hill and down, to the end. From the top of the high hill a mile or more on our way we saw the full grandeur of the Sandwich Range from Chocorua to the Dome stand out in the twilight, the cleft head of old Whiteface right in front being conspicuous, but the depths of the immense basinthat intervened between us and its rugged sides were al ready lost in darkness, through which twinkled the early lamps of the small settlement at its base. We made the descent over the steep and hazardous road, and a few minutes later drew up before the hospitable door of Mr. William mccrillis, the principal resident and owner at the Intervale. In the sitting room we found a cheerful fire in the Open fireplace and a cordial welcome to the circle gathered, which included several who were, like ourselves, strangers and pilgrims. The cheerful warmth and a good supper dissipated the temporary feeling of discomfort incident to our cold ride, but a night's rest was needed to relieve our fatigue after the long and hard journey of the day. Our sleeping apartments were in a small cottage adjacent to the main dwelling, and thither we retired, our demur at lockless doors and the absence of other city safe guards creating some amusement among the members of the family and the other guests. Sunday morning we awoke in full realization of the poet's expression: Through Sandwich notch the west-wind sang Good morrow to the cotter. Memorials of Harriet Martineau by Maria Weston Chapman was published in 1877 as volume three of Harriet Martineau’s Autobiography. While the triple-decker was a popular format of the era, the configuration of a two-volume autobiography authored by one and a one-volume biography written by another is unusual. Indeed, the work’s publishing history reveals that, in reissues of the Autobiography, the Memorials volume was not reproduced; while some might claim that the problem is with the editor—American abolitionist Chapman—rather than the contents, the fact remains that the bulk of the volume consists of primary materials written by Martineau that are available nowhere else, published or archival. Chapman’s participation in the project was originally conceived as supplemental, in the event that the ailing Martineau did not live long enough to complete her memoirs; as it happened, Martineau—who finished the two volumes and had them privately printed in 1855—lived another twenty-one years. Whereas the Autobiography records what Martineau called the “interior life” or subjective perspective on her career, Chapman’s volume addressed the exterior by offering a biographical overview of her friend’s life and work, a record of her last decades, and a collection of posthumous memorials by those with whom her private and public lives intersected. Chapman’s role was to “take up the parallel thread of her exterior life,—to gather up and co-ordinate from the materials placed in my hands the illustrative facts and fragments by her omitted or forgotten; and to show . . . what no mind can see for itself,—the effect of its own personality on the world.” This volume is the first scholarly edition of the Memorials—a biography of one of the foremost intellectual women of the nineteenth century, told primarily in her own words.
