Not illustrated. 1893 edition. Excerpt: ... 77.--Edward Taylor, 1815. Son of Joseph and Ann Taylor of Cloughside, born 18oo, died 1878. He was a farmer at Old Hall. 78.--George W1ll1am Wood, 1815. He was the son of the Rev. William Wood of Leeds and Louisa his wife, daughter of George Oates of Leeds. He was born in 1781, and died in 1843. He was a merchant in Manchester, and also represented Kendal in Parliament for several years. But he is best known for the share he had in the promotion of the Dissenters' Chapels Bill. He was, until his death, chairman of the committee representing the English and Irish Dissenters whose property was in danger; and in the preliminary negotiations, between the various parties whose interests conflicted, he threw himself so eagerly into the work that his health gave way, and he died suddenly in October, 1843. His place as leader, was taken by Mr. Mark Philips, as already stated. But though Mr. Wood did not live to see the final success of the movement, his labours were not forgotten. An address was presented to his widow, recording the gratitude of those whose welfare he had sought to promote, and bearing the signatures of 3,176 persons belonging to 44 congregations in Lancashire and Cheshire. It may be of interest to some readers to see the names of those members of the Stand congregation who signed the address. Sir Stanley Spencer RA CBE worked at the Beaufort Military Hospital as a medical orderly during the First World War. He later served on the forgotten Macedonian Front with a field ambulance unit and an infantry regiment. He saw action, was traumatized and suffered acute bouts of malaria. Five years after the Armistice he started making numerous drawings recalling in great detail his war service. So impressed were two generous patrons, the Behrends, that they built a small chapel near Newbury to house a cycle of paintings. For five years Spencer toiled in the chapel. The resulting murals are quite extraordinary; they stand comparison with the great painted chapels of early Renaissance Italy. The Sandham Memorial Chapel ranks alongside the poetry of Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon, and Britten's War Requiem, as one of the most moving monuments to 20th-century war. This book draws extensively on archive material to tell the complicated and often intense relationship between the architect, the patron and the painter.
