Eight-year-old Mary Ann Simkins was about to embark on a new life in a faraway place. Traveling far from her familiar home, she was on a journey to a life of adventure through the wild bush of Africa, where she would stand face-to-face with a rhinoceros and run as fast as she could from a troop of baboons. An adventure that would also eventually lead her to experience the vibrancy of life and culture in the tropics of West Africa and the exhilaration of life near the ocean. Though apprehension had loomed when she left her native land, it soon melted when she arrived in old Rhodesia with her missionary parents and found instant bonds with the generous and loving African people, as well as the missionaries on the outpost station. She found herself falling in love, not just with them, but with the wild, expansive and untamed land to which she had come. Follow one girl's journey to a new world, and yet a very old one. Filled with thought-provoking and inspiring narratives, Memories of an African Sun honors the great peoples of the African continent and shares their hope for a bright future.

Carolyn Slaughter is the author of ten critically acclaimed novels, but for the last twelve years she has been completely silent. She had become conscious that there was something hidden in her past that had always haunted her fiction but which she had never fully faced. This powerful memoir is the result of confronting the truth about her traumatic childhood. Carolyn's father was in the colonial service, but he lacked power and was ashamed of his Irish origins. In private, he was capable of acts of absolute sadism. When Carolyn was small, they lived comfortably in Swaziland having left India during the Partition. But when she turned six, things changed. Her mother gave birth to another daughter and they were posted to a remote area in the Kalahari desert. Bereft of a civilized social life, her mother plunged into a deep depression and turned completely away from Carolyn. While her older sister found friends and left for boarding school, Carolyn suffered a desperate sense of abandonment and loss and turned to the landscape of the Kalahari itself for solace. The stark fact that Carolyn was first raped by her father at the age of six is contained within the prologue and epilogue of this book. What lies in between is the story of an extraordinary childhood in Africa and a moving depiction of the complexities at the root of our relationships with mother, father, siblings. Despite its sometimes harrowing contents, it is a work of great, dangerous beauty.

When Sabby Mendes leaves Portuguese Goa aboard the dhow Monsoon Wind bound for British East Africa in 1916, he has one dream-to find work as a tailor in the relatively new capital of Nairobi. Sabby is a young man, still a teenager, but he is determined to build a life for himself, and he knows that the opportunities in the British Protectorate are better than those facing him at home. A bright, affable young man with a genuine passion and talent for tailoring, he is not prepared for what he is about to find beyond the Arabian Sea. The Protectorate, which will become British Colony of Kenya, is a highly segregated society with the British firmly ensconced at its top; below them are the "Asians" like Sabby; and at the very bottom are the native African population who are regarded as little more than savages in need of civilization. Beneath the African Sun offers, through the eyes of its protagonist, a street-level view of the changing social and political climate of Kenya between 1916 and 1970, including the 'Mau Mau' Uprising of the native Kikuyu, the eventual independence of Kenya in 1963, and the political fallout that followed. More than a history, it is a story about family, home, social justice, and what it means to truly belong somewhere.

In the following write up I have recreated my experiences and adventures covering safaris over a dozen year period ranging from the Cape to the Caprivi in discovering Africa . It's a story that tries to capture the feel of safari, the smells, the sounds, and sights one experiences in the African bush. Despite all the game taken and the travel to remote and exotic locations, it was the experiences, the adventure, and most of all the memories created by the journeys that were the real essence of what an African hunt is all about. Someone once suggested that I should write a book about my safari adventures and my love affair with Africa. Well, I have. I take you along on my hunting adventures and experiences, some serious and some humorous, ranging from a charging angry 12,000 pound elephant to a battle with a little 30 pound bullet proof sharpes grysbok. Those who have hunted in Africa have many memories of their own from safari. In the following I share my memories so that both the African safari veteran and someone who is still dreaming of going on safari can share in my hunting experiences and the memories I have collected. The book is not just about shooting but it’s about experiencing the feeling of hunting wild animals on their own turf, the unexpected events, and the dangers in the thick bush going face to face with a dangerous animal that can quickly turn the table making you the hunted, and to test yourself when a tough situation arises. But, most importantly, it’s about collecting memories.
