Excerpt from From Gladiateur to Persimmon: Turf Memories of Thirty Years It has been my aim in this book to bring Turf history somewhat "up to date." Thanks to Post and Paddock Silk and Scarlet, Scott and Sebright, and other works of my late father, The Druid, those of the present generation who take an interest in our great national sport have every opportunity of becoming fully acquainted with the deeds of the famous horses that flourished prior to the sixties. Since that date, however, nothing like a history of the Turf has been attempted. Mr. Custance has given us his very interesting Riding Recollections and Turf Stories, but, as the name implies, the book is almost entirely restricted to horses that he rode himself. Then to Mr. John Porter we are indebted for Kingsclere, an admirable record of his long and honourable career as a trainer, and the existence of this book furnishes the reason why I have not devoted any space to the wonderful Turf career of the late Duke of Westminster. This portion of my subject has been fully covered by Mr. Porter, and it would have been folly indeed on my part to have attempted to supplement what he has done so well and thoroughly. Excerpt from Old Memories Mutiny we were mounted on horses the property of Government, the men dressed in dragoon costume, officered by a full complement of British officers, and drilled to perfection as dragoons. In the 3rd Light Cavalry we used to pride ourselves on being steadier on parade than the British cavalry regiment then stationed at Meerut; and proud we were of the old regiment. Our commanding officer was Lieu tenant-colonel G. Carmichael Smyth our adjutant, Lieutenant Sanford, afterwards a most brilliant gab/rear in the Mutiny, who lost his life at the siege of Lucknow under very sad circumstances. Classical Memories is an intervention into the field of adaptation studies, taking the example of classical reception to show that adaptation is a process that can be driven by and produce intertextual memories. I see ‘classical memories’ as a memory-driven type of adaptation that draws on and reproduces schematic and otherwise de-contextualised conceptions of antiquity and its cultural ‘exports’ in, broadly speaking, the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. These memory-driven adaptations differ, often in significant ways, from more traditional adaptations that seek to either continue or deconstruct a long-running tradition that can be traced back to antiquity as well as its canonical points of reception in later ages. When investigating such a popular and widespread set of narratives, characters, and images like those that remain of Graeco-Roman antiquity, terms like ‘adaptation’ and ‘reception’ could and should be nuanced further to allow us to understand the complex interactions between modern works and classical antiquity in more detail, particularly when it pertains to postcolonial or post-digital classical reception. In Classical Memories, I propose that understanding certain types of adaptations as intertextual memories allows us to do just that.

Excerpt from Letters, Journals and Memories of E. Huntington Blatchford, 1920 Frances May Blatchford began this life eleven years earlier than the brother of whom she writes, and ended it thirteen years later. His living presence had been her most vivid and pervasive joy; his memory through those last years was the background of her daily living; the inspiration of her purposes, the refuge from her disappointments. Her love for him developed fast from the elder sister's fondness for the baby of the family into a totally different sentiment. He soon grew old enough to touch her imagination, to awaken her confidence, to rouse her admiration. While still a boy in years he became her practical adviser and her knight of romance. If he had lived to marry, one wonders what woman could have satisfied her requirements as a fit mate for her Galahad, but probably the fact that she was his choice would have covered her with a glamor through which no faults could have emerged save faults of omission or commission toward him. There is no doubt that while gifted with a keen power of character analysis, it was a gift rather than an acquirement; always instinctive, rather than logical, always influenced, sometimes clouded by feeling.
