Being creatures rather of will than of intelligence, they believe in their religion, or totally deny it. The doubts that arise from indifference and scepticism are unknown to them. Scepticism has no effect here either on daily life, or on the life of the mind, or, above all, on the life of the heart. They are more watched over than we are, and their conduct is stricter; if they are guilty of an escapade, they do not boast of it. Jests are permitted, but ribaldry is unknown. They do not worship woman, but they respect her. There is no intellectual elite so strong as ours, but they undoubtedly have a political 6lite, and a much rarer thing, a moral 6lite. Could we pronounce the same panegyric on our French students of the present day? Certainly not; and if a change is coming about, they will certainly owe it to themselves alone; for nothing in the examples they have received, in the books that they have read, or in the lessons that have been given them, have made them understand the necessity of it.
