Excerpt from A New Dictionary of Americanisms: Being a Glossary of Words Supposed to Be Peculiar to the United States and the Dominion of Canada A very dull man, and a pertinacious reader - the terms are by no means incompatible - is said to have had Johnson's Dictionary lent to him by some mischievous friend as an interesting new work, and to have read it through from beginning to end, quite unconscious that he was doing anything unusual. He observed, when he returned it, that the author appeared to him a person of considerable information, but that his style was slightly unconnected. The remark had a good deal of truth in it, for a dictionary is not bad reading on the whole. It is much more endurable than a good many of what are called lighter books, and not much more unconnected. What is an Americanism? In a good many instances the name is given to some archaism belated, or some English provincialism that has worked its way into general acceptance in the United States. It is usual to object, when expressions of either kind are classed by. some one as Americanisms, that they are nothing of the kind, which, though in strictness true enough, is a little unpractical; for surely, when words that have become obsolete in the mother country, or are merely "local" here and there, find themselves in wide or universal popularity in America, it is indeed convenient to class them as what they have practically become - Americanisms. Such words, for instance, as shyster, meeching, etc., are for all practical purposes Americanisms now, and are best classed and defined therewith. If we reject them, we must reject also such characteristic words as boss, stoop, portage, etc. Carry it far enough, and we would have hardly anything left but neologisms. Money Banking In Maryland written by Stuart R. Bruchey and has been published by Maryland Historical Trust Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with Banks and banking categories.

For much of early American history, banks performed not only credit services but also provided as well the great bulk of the national money supply. Suspicion of public paper and its administrators among the Founders kept the government out of the business of issuing currency for decades. The first quarter of this monumental book is the fascinating story, told in a style agreeable to both general readers and specialists by the distinguished economic historian Stuart Bruchey, of the development of credit and banknote practices in the important and ever-expanding Baltimore and Maryland markets in the first half of the nineteenth century, along with the role of the Maryland General Assembly in chartering early banks. This account is followed by a comprehensive catalogue of early Maryland banknotes and their issuers -- the first of its kind for Maryland -- that will delight numismatic collectors, researchers, and all students of the history of banking.

The essential, “richly researched”* biography of Harriet Tubman, revealing a complex woman who “led a remarkable life, one that her race, her sex, and her origins make all the more extraordinary” (*The New York Times Book Review). Harriet Tubman is one of the giants of American history—a fearless visionary who led scores of her fellow slaves to freedom and battled courageously behind enemy lines during the Civil War. Now, in this magnificent biography, historian Kate Clifford Larson gives us a powerful, intimate, meticulously detailed portrait of Tubman and her times. Drawing from a trove of new documents and sources as well as extensive genealogical data, Larson presents Harriet Tubman as a complete human being—brilliant, shrewd, deeply religious, and passionate in her pursuit of freedom. A true American hero, Tubman was also a woman who loved, suffered, and sacrificed. Praise for Bound for the Promised Land “[Bound for the Promised Land] appropriately reads like fiction, for Tubman’s exploits required such intelligence, physical stamina and pure fearlessness that only a very few would have even contemplated the feats that she actually undertook. . . . Larson captures Tubman’s determination and seeming imperviousness to pain and suffering, coupled with an extraordinary selflessness and caring for others.”—The Seattle Times “Essential for those interested in Tubman and her causes . . . Larson does an especially thorough job of . . . uncovering relevant documents, some of them long hidden by history and neglect.”—The Plain Dealer “Larson has captured Harriet Tubman’s clandestine nature . . . reading Ms. Larson made me wonder if Tubman is not, in fact, the greatest spy this country has ever produced.”—The New York Sun
