In response, the youth of the city took up arms and repelled the force sent to occupy the city. They then held off British reinforcements for two weeks, battling tanks and heavy artillery with nothing more than light weapons and sheer audacity. Annangguru merupakan sosok perekat ukhuwah bangsa ini. Posisinya di masyarakat berada pada tingkatan tertinggi karena ilmu yang dimilikinya. Perannya sebagai panutan dalam satu daerah manjadi nur atau cahaya. Istilah ulama secara luas digunakan di dunia Islam dan paling tidak, setiap muslim mengetahui apa arti istilah tersebut. Di Indonesia, beberapa istilah lokal digunakan untuk menunjukkan berbagai tingkat keulamaan sedangkan istilah yang sering digunakan untuk menyebut ulama adalah kyai. Khusus masyarakat Mandar dalam menyebut seorang ulama dengan menggunakan istilah annangguru, meskipun tetap ada yang menggunakan kyai. Annangguru (Bugis: Angrengguru, Makassar: Anrongguru, Jawa: Kyai) merupakan pengaruh Bugis, berasal dari kata annang yang berarti kelompok atau kaum, guru berarti pimpinan. Jadi, pimpinan suatu kelompok itu disebut annangguru.12 Dalam masyarakat Mandar dan Bugis, annangguru atau angrengguru adalah pemimpin spiritual dalam suatu kelompok. Pasca Perjanjian Bongayya pengaruh Bugis-Makassar kuat sekali dan sampai ke tanah Mandar, dimana pemimpin spiritual dari daerah tersebut yaitu Sultan Hasanuddin dan Arung Palakka, keduanya menjabat sebagai raja juga sebagai pemimpin spiritual. Penyebutan angrengguru di tanah Bugis berkembang pada tradisi Nahdatul Ulama untuk mereka yang ahli dalam bidang keagamaan, sedangkan untuk kelompok Muhammadiyah dikenal dengan sebutan Tuan Guru (Tn. Guru). Pada tahun 1911, para angrengguru dari kalangan NU di tanah Bugis mulai mendirikan sekolah yang diperuntukkan untuk putra-putra bangsawan, demikian pula dari kelompok Muhammadiyah juga mendirikan sekolah-sekolah yang dipelopori oleh para tuan guru. Referensi tentang annangguru masih sangat sedikit, khususnya di Mandar. DR. Aco Musaddad sebagai salah satu putra terbaik Mandar mempersembahakannya dalam bentuk data dan narasi. Banyak peran-peran annangguru yang ditukilkan dalam lembaran-lembaran naskah ini. Michael Billig presents a major challenge to orthodox conceptions of nationalism in this elegantly written book. While traditional theorizing has tended to the focus on extreme expressions of nationalism, the author turns his attention to the everyday, less visible forms which are neither exotic or remote, he describes as `banal nationalism′. The author asks why people do not forget their national identity. He suggests that in daily life nationalism is constantly flagged in the media through routine symbols and habits of language. Banal Nationalism is critical of orthodox theories in sociology, politics and social psychology for ignoring this core feature of national identity.
