When Men at Arnhem was first published in 1976 the author modestly concealed his identity behind a pseudonym and changed the names of his comrades in arms. But the book was at once recognised as one of the finest evocations of an infantrymans war ever written and those in the know were quick to identify the author. His cover has long since been blown, in this edition Geoffrey Powell adds an introduction in which he identifies the men who fought with him in those eight terrible days at Arnhem in September, 1944. The book cannot be said to be a military history in the strictest sense, even the units involved being unidentified, but the events described are, as the author points out in his introduction, as nearly accurate as memory allowed after a lapse of over thirty years. It is unlikely every to be surpassed as the most vivid first-hand account of one of those epic disasters which we British, in our paradoxical way, seem to cherish above and beyond the most glorious victories.

A fact-based novel about the Battle of Arnhem/Oosterbeek. Market Garden was an ill-planned airborne operation to capture the main bridges over the Rhine in Holland in order to allow the 30th Armored Corps to sweep into Germany. American paratroopers were assigned to the two nearer bridges at Eindhoven and Nijmegan and the British 1st Airborne Division to the most northern bridge at Arnhem - 50 miles behind enemy lines. From the start it had been recognized by a senior commander as possibly being "a bridge too far". It will remain the biggest airborne operation ever executed. The First Airborne Division had seen action in North Africa 18 months previously but had missed out on the D-Day landings when its brother division - the Sixth - had been in the vanguard of those operations. Both Churchill and Montgomery were keen to commit this elite force into battle, but the speed of the allied advance after D-Day forced the cancellation of 16 operations, until Market Garden offered the opportunity to send the paratroopers into action. They cobbled the operation together in seven days using parts of the previous plans. In their haste to commit the troops, they made many planning mistakes and ignored vital shortcomings such as inefficient radios, the loss of the element of surprise, dropping the men in three daylight installments, and evidence showing that the Germans had based heavily armed troops close to the bridge. The operation was doomed from the start. The failure was heroic - only a small fraction of the force reached the bridge and held it against overwhelming odds - not for the planned 24 hours but for more than double that time, being forced to surrender only after they had run out of ammunition. Despite heavy casualties, the remainder of the force fought a defensive action waiting for the arrival of the 30th Armored Corp, but after a week, they were forced to withdraw across the river. Five Victoria Crosses were awarded for bravery during the operation. Whilst the three main characters are fictional, they are based on true characters. There really was a Corporal Bert, and the Caythorpe Commando really existed. We follow the three men through their training and share their fears and terror of their first parachute jumps, and then follows them into action for the first time. A picture of life in a Lincolnshire village in 1944 is drawn and we see the effect on the villagers when the paratroopers arrived and lived amongst them. The diary of the Dutch girl, who helped to nurse wounded paratroopers, whilst fictitious, has been vetted by a Dutch lady who herself lived in the heart of the battle as a child. The widow of an officer who fought at Arnhem as a member of the Lonsdale Force has read and approved the novel.

For the British 1st Airborne Division Operation Market Garden in September 1944 was a disaster. The Division was eliminated as a fighting force with around a half of its men were captured.The Germans were faced with dealing with 6,000 prisoners in a fortnight; many of them seriously wounded. Somehow the men were processed and dispatched to camps around Germany and German occupied eastern Europe. Here the men experienced the reality of the collapsing regime - little food and shrinking frontiers.Once liberated in 1945, returning former prisoners were required to complete liberation questionnaires. Some refused. Others returned before 'Operation Endor' to handle released men and their repatriation to Britain was in place. Around a third did. However the questionnaires that do exist give an picture of every day experience for the 2,357 of these elite troops' time in captivity from capture to release.They show that German procedures still operating, but that men were often treated inhumanely, when moved to camps by closed box cars and when camps were evacuated. Although their interrogators were interested in Allied aircraft and airfields, their interrogators were also concerned the effect of the new miracle weapons and with politics, how Germany would be treated after an Allied victory?Nevertheless the airborne men's morale remained high; carrying out sabotage at artificial oil plants, railway repairs, factories and mines. Some overcame their guards when being evacuated at the end of the War, in some cases joining the Resistance. They record help received from Dutch, French and German civilians.

The fierce struggle between the British 1st Airborne Division and the superior German forces in and around Arnhem is well documented. This book tells of the role played in the battle for Oosterbeek and the bridge at Arnhem itself by the men of the Glider Pilot Regiment (GPR). These men were already experienced soldiers who volunteered to join the airborne forces and take the fight to the Germans in a totally new regiment.The men of the GPR were predominantly SNCOs trained to fly wooden assault gliders into occupied territory. Once on the ground they were expected to go into battle with the troops they had delivered onto the Landing Zone. During the Arnhem operation they were involved in the initial defense of the LZs, before fighting house to house leading mixed groups of infantrymen, engineers and medics. In so doing they suffered extensive losses from which the Regiment never fully recovered. This book tells their story in their own words from the moment they landed on Dutch soil through the fierce fighting all around the ever shrinking perimeter until the survivors of the GPR proudly marked the route out for the battered survivors of 1st Airborne Division as they escaped over the Rhine.

Operation 'Market Garden' was the largest airborne operation in history and its aim was to end the war in Europe by Christmas 1944. On 17 September, twenty-thousand men were dropped behind enemy lines to seize a number of vital Rhine bridges in the Netherlands over which the British Second Army would advance. But they had underestimated what the enemy was still capable of achieving, and their advance was blocked by two resolute German SS Panzer divisions. Reinforcement soldiers coming by land, had been delayed by stiff German resistance and bad weather, and were eventually prevented from reaching Arnhem. This resulted in 6,000 British paratroopers being taken prisoner. The two US airborne divisions who also held their ground suffered 3,500 casualties.
