It was the weapon to end all weapons: the doomsday device. A huge nuclear bomb so powerful that it could envelop the entire planet in a cloud of radioactive dust, and bring about instant extinction. This is the untold story of the Cold War’s most insane plan, the men behind it and how it nearly happened. It is also the history of humanity’s nightmare vision of a superweapon, showing how popular culture, from the stories of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne to films such as Planet of the Apes, Mad Max and Dr Strangelove itself have both shaped and reflected our darkest dreams.

Of Beards And Men written by Christopher Oldstone-Moore and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-03-21 with Health & Fitness categories.

Beards—they’re all the rage these days. Take a look around: from hip urbanites to rustic outdoorsmen, well-groomed metrosexuals to post-season hockey players, facial hair is everywhere. The New York Times traces this hairy trend to Big Apple hipsters circa 2005 and reports that today some New Yorkers pay thousands of dollars for facial hair transplants to disguise patchy, juvenile beards. And in 2014, blogger Nicki Daniels excoriated bearded hipsters for turning a symbol of manliness and power into a flimsy fashion statement. The beard, she said, has turned into the padded bra of masculinity. Of Beards and Men makes the case that today’s bearded renaissance is part of a centuries-long cycle in which facial hairstyles have varied in response to changing ideals of masculinity. Christopher Oldstone-Moore explains that the clean-shaven face has been the default style throughout Western history—see Alexander the Great’s beardless face, for example, as the Greek heroic ideal. But the primacy of razors has been challenged over the years by four great bearded movements, beginning with Hadrian in the second century and stretching to today’s bristled resurgence. The clean-shaven face today, Oldstone-Moore says, has come to signify a virtuous and sociable man, whereas the beard marks someone as self-reliant and unconventional. History, then, has established specific meanings for facial hair, which both inspire and constrain a man’s choices in how he presents himself to the world. This fascinating and erudite history of facial hair cracks the masculine hair code, shedding light on the choices men make as they shape the hair on their faces. Oldstone-Moore adeptly lays to rest common misperceptions about beards and vividly illustrates the connection between grooming, identity, culture, and masculinity. To a surprising degree, we find, the history of men is written on their faces.

Changing Education written by Joyce Antler and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990-07-05 with Education categories.

"By combining history, theory, philosophy, case studies and monographs with broader issues, Changing Education shows how educational experience and knowledge are deeply gendered. One of its strengths--indeed the excitement of women's studies in general--is its breadth and interdisciplinary nature. It pays attention to such issues in feminist theory andwomen's studies as women's culture and the sameness versus difference debate; at the same time it provides a wealth of information and new material that is not available elsewhere." -- Susan Ware, New York University "It highlights gender as a cultural phenomenon, showing that women's experience in education has been shaped by gender-specific stereotypes and concepts. At the same time, the essays show how women used gender categories to their own advantage to create new lines of work (such as kindergarten teaching and child study activity) or to overcome societal prejudice by way of collective action (such as the Boston Women's Health Collective). "It makes an important contribution to the debate about women's culture versus women's politics, showing the significance of each; e.g., the women's page of the Jewish Daily Foreword as a vehicle for women's (traditional) culture and contemporary committed feminism. I think you have a winner here." -- Ann J. Lane, Colgate University

A boy doesn't automatically become a man at age 18. What differentiates a man from a boy is the way he lives. A boy lives day to day, wants to be MVP, plays, wants the reassurance of the crowd, and is a predator. A man has a vision for his life, is a team player, works, has the courage to take a minority position, and is a protector. These are the five marks of a man. It's not enough to just know them. A real man aggressively pursues them on a daily basis. Drawing from his own experience and the lives of others, pastor Brian Tome calls on men to examine themselves and take steps in the direction of a fully realized manhood that honors God, respects women, elevates others, and works purposefully for an end greater than their own satisfaction or pleasure. It's time for men to step into their honorable place in the world and lean into a new reality--one defined by strength, purpose, and honor.
