Dengan risiko jika kemampuan bahasa Korea tidak sesuai target, maka aku harus kembali pulang ke Indonesia dan batalnya status beasiswa. Tak terasa, empat musim pun telah berlalu dengan banyak cerita. Tentunya sebelum sampai di Korea Selatan ini, berbagai usaha yang panjang telah kulalui hingga akhirnya beasiswa S3 “Global Korea Scholarship” ini bisa didapatkan. Dengan banyaknya keterbatasan yang ada, terutama kemampuan dalam berbahasa asing. Maka keyakinan adalah modal utamaku dalam meraih mimpi studi di luar negeri. Keberadaanku di sini Insya Allah masih cukup lama. Masih banyak harapan yang ingin kukejar. Semoga menjadi bekal yang berharga saat nanti kembali pulang ke Indonesia.

This book examines popular culture in Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim nation, and the third largest democracy. It provides a full account of the key trends since the collapse of the authoritarian Suharto regime (1998), a time of great change in Indonesian society more generally. It explains how one of the most significant results of the deepening industrialization in Southeast Asia since the 1980s has been the expansion of consumption and new forms of media, and that Indonesia is a prime example of this development. It goes on to show that although the Asian economic crisis in 1997 had immediate and negative impacts on incumbent governments, as well as the socioeconomic life for most people in the region, at the same time popular cultures have been dramatically reinvigorated as never before. It includes analysis of important themes, including political activism and citizenship, gender, class, age and ethnicity. Throughout, it shows how the multilayered and contradictory processes of identity formation in Indonesia are inextricably linked to popular culture. Maskulinitas is a ground-breaking treatment of the representation of men and masculinity in Indonesian culture, from Suharto's New Order era to the present. Drawing on the ideas of Bakhtin, Bourdieu, Maier, and others, author Marshall Clark explores, with acute insight and a critical eye, constructions of the masculine in contemporary Indonesian society. Maskulinitas also challenges the way scholars of Indonesia have held firm to the categories and frameworks of gender studies - a field still often equated with women's studies - while offering fascinating insights into representations and images of men as engendered and engendering subjects. As a timely addition to the generally conservative field of scholarship on gender in Southeast Asia, Maskulinitas demonstrates that gender studies need to encompass 'the man question, ' especially considering Indonesia's strongly patriarchal society, where the norms of feminine subordination and submission are legitimized by the ideologies of the state and the strictures of religion. Critical theory and popular wisdom are rife with images of surveillance as an intrusive, repressive practice often suggestively attributed to eastern powers and opposed to western liberalism. Hollywood-dominated global media has long promulgated a geopoliticized east-west axis of freedom vs. control. This book focuses on Asian and Asia-based films and cinematic traditions obscured by lopsided western hegemonic discourse and—more specifically—probes these films’ treatments of a phenomenon that western film often portrays with neo-orientalist hysteria. Exploring recent and historical movies made in post-social and anti-Communist societies such as China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Vietnam and South Korea, the book picks up on the political and economic concerns implicitly underlying Sinophobic and anti-Communist Asian images in Hollywood films while also considering how these societies and states depict the issues of centralization, militarization and technological innovation so often figured as distinctive of the difference between eastern despotism and western liberalism.
