Cabai katokkon merupakan salah sumber daya hayati yang sangat dibutuhkan oleh masyarakat Indonesia, khususnya di daerah Toraja, namun belum diteliti lebih mendalam. Cabai katokkon adalah varietas cabai merah asal Kabupaten Toraja Utara dan banyak dibudidayakan di beberapa kabupaten di Provinsi Sulawesi Selatan. Cabai ini memiliki potensi yang sangat bagus untuk dikembangkan menjadi varietas cabai unggul karena rasanya yang pedas, bentuknya yang unik, serta nilai ekonominya yang tinggi. Kandungan kimiawi yang ada dalam cabai katokkon serta beberapa jenis cabai pada umumnya yang meliputi vitamin C, karotenoid, dan capsaicin dapat dimanfaatkan untuk meningkatkan imun manusia terhadap infeksi SARS-CoV-2. Selain nilai ekonominya yang tinggi, cabai katokkon juga memiliki nilai etnobotani tersendiri bagi masyarakat Toraja karena sering digunakan dalam kuliner khas daerah. Budi daya cabai katokkon perlu lebih dikembangkan dan dioptimalkan lagi guna meningkatkan produktivitas dan kualitasnya. Sejauh ini, budi daya cabai katokkon masih dilakukan secara konvensional dengan berfokus pada penggunaan pupuk kandang ataupun kombinasi pupuk buatan yang seimbang serta pemasangan mulsa plastik di lahan. Pemuliaan tanaman yang telah diaplikasikan pada cabai katokkon untuk meningkatkan kualitas dan produktivitasnya ialah seleksi, persilangan, dan poliploidisasi menggunakan kolkisin.

Jawa Timur memiliki posisi strategis bagi penopang ekonomi Indonesia. Posisi strategis tersebut setidaknya ditunjukkan oleh Jawa Timur memiliki jumlah penduduk terbesar kedua di Indonesia, (ii) kontribusi PDRB Jawa Timur terbesar kedua Nasional, kontribusi Dana Pihak Ketiga (DPK) dan kredit bank umum di Jawa Timur kerap kali yang tertinggi di level nasional, serta (iv) realisasi Penanaman Modal Dalam Negeri (PMDN) di Jawa Timur seringkali menjadi yang tertinggi di level nasional. Namun, pandemi covid-19 telah memberi dampak signifikan bagi kehidupan masyarakat, mengubah perilaku, dan membentuk tatanan kehidupan new normal. Dari sisi ekonomi, dampak covid-19 telah menekan sisi permintaan maupun sisi penawaran. Berbagai kebijakan mengurangi penyebaran virus, telah dilakukan oleh berbagai negara, termasuk Indonesia. Kebijakan lockdown, pembatasan sosial berskala besar (PSBB), hingga pemberlakuan pembatasan kegiatan masyarakat (PPKM) merupakan ragam kebijakan yang telah dilakukan di berbagal negara. Tentu saja fokus utamanya bukan hanya penanganan pada sisl kesehatan saja, namun juga menjaga dampaknya pada sisi ekonomi. Di era new normal, kampanye hidup sehat dengan mencuci tangan, menggunakan masker, menjaga jarak, menghindari kerumunan, dan mengurangi mobilitas, atau dikenal “5M”, terus dilakukan pemerintah, baik pusat maupun daerah. Concern is often expressed that our environment may include an increasingly large variety of mutagens, but the extent of the potential hazard they pose has yet to be fully evaluated. A variety of empirical procedures has been devised with which to estimate the mutagenic potency of suspect agents, and the relative merits of different tests are currently under debate. Although such tests are of great value, and are indeed indispensable, they are not, nevertheless, sufficient. In the long term, accurate estimation of hazard will also require a better understanding of the various mechanisms of mutagenesis, and in many instances these remain remarkably elusive. Our knowledge and appreciation of the problem has increased substantially over the last few years, but the precise way in which many mutagens cause mutations is not yet known. The aims of this conference were therefore two-fold. The first was to survey present information about mutagenic mechanisms, drawing together data from work with various experimental approaches and organisms, in order to discern the principles governing the action of different mutagens. The second was to examine the implications of such principles for the execution and evaluation of test procedures, and critically assess the research areas that need further attention in order to improve the interpretation of test results.
