Obschon das Thema Menschenschmuggel in den Medien grosses Interesse geniesst, gibt es kaum ein gesichertes und differenziertes Wissen zu diesem Phänomen. Die vorliegende Studie untersucht die verschiedenen Formen, Hintergründe und Dynamiken des Menschenschmuggels in der Schweiz. Nebst der Analyse bestehender Daten und Statistiken wurde in mehr als 40 persönlichen Interviews das Wissen von PraktikerInnen und FachexpertInnen eingeholt und valorisiert. Als Schweizer Beitrag zu einem europäischen Forschungsprojekt sowie getragen vom Bundesamt für Flüchtlinge (BFF), möchte diese Studie mit ihren Ergebnissen eine Migrationspolitik mitformulieren, die den Menschenschmuggel zwar effektiv bekämpft, dies aber nicht auf Kosten der international verbrieften Menschenrechte tut.

Tina Hollstein fragt in ihrer Studie nach Bewältigungs- und Unterstützungsprozessen von Personen ohne legalen Aufenthaltsstatus in Deutschland. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass sich das Bewältigungshandeln der Akteure nicht auf aufenthaltrechtliche Anforderungen und Herausforderungen in Deutschland begrenzt, sondern grenzüberschreitende Verflechtungen der Bewältigung und Unterstützung für ihre Lebensrealität in der aufenthaltsrechtlichen Illegalität konstitutiv sind. Im Prozess der Lebensbewältigung ergeben sich daraus spezifische Anforderungen, aber auch Ressourcen, die mit einer transnationalen Perspektive der Bewältigung erschlossen werden. Dadurch wird sichtbar, dass die Akteure aktiv Gestaltende ihrer Lebenswelt und vielfach bedeutende Unterstützungsgebende sind.
