Pada mulanya masyarakat sipil adalah diskursus pemikiran kritis radikal sebagai media untuk menjelaskan dan dipahami dalam konotasi sebagai gerakan rakyat untuk melakukan resistensi terhadap negara yang pada konteks zamannya, negara dianalisis justru sebagai alat kapitalisme. Antonio Gramsci, yang sering disebutkan dalam literatur ilmu sosial sebagai tokoh yang memunculkan diskursus masyarakat sipil, memfokuskan secara sungguh-sungguh dan mendasar analisisnya terhadap konsep negara dikaitkan dengan dalam bahasannya mengenai konsep hegemoni yang diperankan negara untuk menjinakkan rakyat dalam rangka melanggengkan kapitalisme. Pandangan Gramsci ini secara tidak langsung merupakan kritik terhadap analisis atas kapitalisme yang menekankan pada hubungan kapitalis dan buruh, seperti dalam Marxisme tradisional. Kekalahan kaum marginal, bagi Gramsci, justru bukan karena penindasan dan kekerasan fisik, melainkan karena hegemoni, yakni penjinakan budaya dan ideologi yang dilakukan oleh negara terhadap masyarakat sipil. Sejak itulah dan pada perkembangan selanjutnya, konsep masyarakat sipil senantiasa merupakan diskursus pemikiran kritis terhadap kapitalisme. WACANA, Jurnal Ilmu Sosial Alternatif, dalam nomor perkenalan ini sengaja menurunkan tema sekitar masyarakat sipil. Jurnal WACANA sesungguhnya tidak berpotensi untuk menyamakan konsep dan perbedaan pandangan dan kepentingan sekitar pembahasan masyarakat sipil tersebut, akan tetapi WACANA lebih tertarik untuk memfasilitasi proses pergumulan pemikiran dan perdebatan sekitar masyarakat sipil, dan kesimpulan diserahkan sepenuhnya kepada pembaca.
