Las escuelas y los mercados nunca estuvieron próximos en la historia contemporánea. Allí donde una era la encargada de la transmisión del conocimiento, la promoción de los valores y la formación de las nuevas generaciones, el otro se dedicaba a la transacción de productos y servicios, en una lógica competitiva que poco o nada tenía que ver con sentidos ni trascendencias. Esta distancia se redujo casi completamente en Chile y en otras latitudes a partir de la década de los 80’s, como parte de una revolución mayor que experimentó la sociedad chilena en sus relaciones entre Estado, mercado y ciudadanía. During recent decades, social inequalities have increased in many urban spaces in the globalized world, and education has not been immune to these tendencies. Urban segregation, migration movements and education policies themselves have produced an increasing process of school segregation between the most disadvantaged social groups and the middle classes. Exploring school segregation patterns in Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, England, France, Peru, Spain, Sweden and the USA, this volume provides an overview of the main characteristics and causes of school segregation, as well as its consequences for issues such as education inequalities, students' performance, social cohesion and intercultural contact. The book is organized in three parts, with Part 1 exploring the systemic dimensions of education inequalities that shape different patterns of school segregation, and the extent to which public policies have addressed this challenge. This book develops a theoretically rich analysis of quantification and subjectivity, tracing new linkages between educational policy and everyday life in schools, diving deeper into ‘ordinary’ schools as they encounter and navigate quantified forms of recognition. With a focus on Chile as a critical case of neoliberal experimentation, this book investigates whether intense exposure to quantified forms of meaning and sense-making in school settings could develop into metrics-driven dispositions or attachments. Contemporary demands on schools for calculation, prediction, and comparison by the use of accountability tools like high-stakes testing, league tables, consequential inspection ratings and ‘progress’ measures evidence the relentless presence of quantification in teaching and learning.
