Excerpt from Mere Literature And 'so very whimsical things sometimes happen, because of this scientific and positivist spirit of the age, when the study of the litera ture of any language is made part of the cur riculum of our colleges. The more delicate and subtle purposes of the study are put quite out of countenance, and literature is commanded to assume the phrases and the methods of science. It would be very painful if it should turn out that schools and universities were agencies of Philistinism; but there are some things which should prepare us for such a dis covery. Our present plans for teaching every body involve certain unpleasant things quiteinevitably. It is obv10us that you cannot have universal education without restricting your teaching to such things as can be universally understood. It is plain that you cannot impart university methods to thousands, or create investigators by the score, unless you con fine your university education to matters which dull men can investigate, your laboratory training to tasks which mere plodding dili gence and submissive patience can compass. Yet, if you do so limit and constrain what you teach, you thrust taste and insight and delicacy of perception out of the schools, exalt the obvi ous and the merely useful above the things which are only imaginatively or spiritually con ceived, make education an affair of tasting and handling and smelling, and so create Philistia, that country in which they speak of mere lit erature. Excerpt from English Literature Uring the last few years the importance of English Literature in any system of education - whether Primary, Secondary, or University - has been gradually recognised. And, partly as a consequence of this recognition, there is an increasing number of older readers who desire to know a little more' about our great authors and their works. Among the many excellent works dealing with English Literature, there appears to be room for something between a mere primer on the one hand, and a long and advanced history of literature on the other. The present volume, written in a simple style with as few technicalities as possible, is designed to fill this inter mediate position. It is primarily intended for pupils in the Upper Forms of Secondary Schools, but it will be found equally suitable for the general reader. Excerpt from The Tutorial History of English Literature The common complaint against smaller text-books of literature is that they include too much, and fail to pre serve due proportion between the greater and the lesser writers. In this book the lesser writers are mentioned, if at all, only incidentally; and the attempt has been made, in passing from one great writer to another, to give the history, as distinguished from the mere story, of English literature - to lay bare some of the more important aspects of the work of each author selected, while tracing the lines of development from writer to writer - in a word, to make an elementary book scientific, as far as the methods of science are applicable. In this task I have had no model before me to improve upon, and am more painfully aware, than any friendly reader or critic can be, of Shortcomings in its execution. In particular I have felt the difficulty of being consistent in difficulty: of avoiding the Opposite dangers of 'talking over people's heads' and childish simplicity. The former danger may be largely obviated if the student, before perusing each chapter, will read the English Classics recommended on.
