Masterarbeit aus dem Jahr 2017 im Fachbereich Kunst - Kunstgeschichte, Note: 1,3, Freie Universität Berlin, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Bei dieser Masterarbeit geht es darum, den Professionalisierungsprozess des bildenden Künstlers Kurt Schwitters im Bereich der Typographie zu verdeutlichen. Inwieweit kann der Avantgarde-Künstler Kurt Schwitters in das Berufsfeld des Typographen eingeordnet werden? Diese Leitfrage soll in der vorliegenden Arbeit beantwortet werden. Der Zeitraum von 1923 bis 1933 wird betrachtet, da Kurt Schwitters sich in dieser Zeit intensiv mit Typographie befasst hat. Die Jahreszahl 1933 steht symbolisch für die Machtergreifung der Nationalsozialisten, deren Einfluss schon Jahre davor spürbar war und dazu führte, dass der Wirkungskreis des Künstlers und seiner Kollegen zunehmend eingeschränkt wurde. Ausschlaggebend für die Idee zu dieser Arbeit war zunächst die Beobachtung, dass es wenige detaillierte Abhandlungen über die typographischen Arbeiten von Kurt Schwitters gibt. Resultierend aus der These, dass Typographie ein Handwerk ist, das früher den Schriftsetzern und Buchdruckern vorbehalten war und seit der Jahrhundertwende zum 20. Jahrhundert von Künstlern entdeckt und professionalisiert wurde, stellt sich die Frage, ob ihre typographischen Arbeiten als Kunst zu werten, oder ob sie den handwerklichen Maßstäben der Typographen unterzuordnen sind. Ziel der Arbeit ist es, das typographische Werk von Schwitters in den Kontext der Neuen Typographie zu stellen. Es gilt zu untersuchen, inwieweit die typographische Tätigkeit von Schwitters oder den anderen Künstlern, die sich mit Neuer Typographie befasst haben, in das Berufsbild des Gebrauchsgrafikers einzuordnen ist. Als Methode wird die typographische Analyse der drucktechnischen Werke von Kurt Schwitters gewählt. Exemplarisch wurden seine MERZ-Hefte untersucht, deren Gestaltung in vier Phasen zu unterteilen sind und den Weg zur Professionalisierung des Künstlers auf dem Gebiet der Typographie markieren. Die Untersuchung folgt der Maxime, den Umschlag und zwei Seiten jedes einzelnen Heftes zu beschreiben, die relevanten Inhalte zu nennen und am Ende eine Gegenüberstellung von Aussagen aus Lehrbüchern der Zeit zu realisieren. Weiterhin wird eine markante Schrift analysiert, die Kurt Schwitters in den späteren Jahren für seine Auftragsarbeiten benutzt hatte und für unterschiedliche Produkte einsetzte. Beide Aspekte dienen dazu, den Dualismus von Künstlern und Fachleuten zu verdeutlichen und eine Grundlage zu späteren Fachdiskussion über die Neue Typographie vorzubereiten.
