Marie-Henri Beyle - better-known by his pen name, Stendhal - was born in Grenoble, France in 1783. He turned to writing after the final defeat of Napoleon in 1815, notable works include A Life of Rossini (1824), A Life of Napoleon (1929) and The Red and the Black published in 1830. A number of works were published posthumously, including Lamiel (1889), Memoirs of an Egotist (1892) and Lucien Leuwen (1894). Stendhal is now regarded as one of the earliest and foremost practitioners of literary realism.

Peintre de l'intimité bourgeoise, Edouard Vuillard (1868 - 1940) a débuté à l'atelier Maillart, puis à l'académie Julian en 1888 où il adhère au groupe des Nabi alors en formation. Comme ses camarades Bonnard, Roussel, Sérusier et Maurice Denis, il adopte d'abord, à l'exemple de Gauguin, les larges aplats, les couleurs pures et le cloisonnement des formes sous les cernes. Il côtoie le milieu littéraire de la Revue Blanche, exécute des décors pour les théâtres d'avant-garde. Mais c'est dans ses thèmes de prédilection, les intérieurs bourgeois, qu'il tire le meilleur parti de la poésie décorative du style nabi. A partir de 1900, sa manière plus réaliste s'oriente vers des compositions monumentales pour les demeures de la grande bourgeoisie qu'il enrichit de ses dons de portraitiste.
