Excerpt from Mesothorium Mesothorium is identical with radium chemically, and both ele ments are closely analogous to barium. Mesothorium can not be separated from radium; therefore, radium extracted from uranium minerals containing thorium contains also mesothorium, and mesothorium separated from monazite sand usually owes approxi mately 20 per cent of its activity to the radium in the mineral. In a mineral containing equal proportions of uranium and thorium, the gamma radiation contributed by the radium is nearly six times as strong as that due to mesothorium alone, and nearly two and one-half times the total gamma radiation from mesothorium and its equilibrium products, when measured through cm. Of lead. The methods used in extracting radium from its ores may be du plicated suitably in conserving the mesothorium in monazite sand. A little barium salt is added to the monazite sand during the treatment with sulphuric acid. The mesothorium and radium then follow the barium sulphate in the process of the recovery of thorium. Excerpt from Monazite, Thorium, and Mesothorium The monazite industry in the United States has been practically at a standstill since 1906, principally for the reason that monazite could be mined and Obtained cheaper from Brazil, where large deposits are found and exploited along the seacoast and in the interior. For merly part of the monazite mined in the States of North and South Carolina was used for the manufacture of thorium nitrate in this country and part of the production was sent to Germany. It seems an Opportune time to call attention to the monazite deposits in the United States, as the imports of thorium nitrate are at present cur tailed. There is reason to believe that a more general manufacture of thorium nitrate may be developed in this country. It may be many years before supplies of the nitrate from Europe can be depended upon. There are deposits of monazite in several of our States, and with the knowledge that a valuable product - mesothorium - can be made as a by - product from the residues of thorium nitrate manufacture the industry may be developed in this country and should pay well. Mesothorium is used successfully in therapy in the same manner as radium. With these facts in view the following description of the occurrences of monazite in the United States, the uses to which its products can be put, and the methods of mining and treatment has been prepared by the Bureau of Mines with the purpose of aiding more efficient utilization of radioactive minerals. Excerpt from Radium, Vol. 2: October, 1913 The hardest gamma rays Of radium are far harder than the hardest X rays (cf. The scheme of Bayet in Lazarus' Handbuch der radium-biologic und Therapie). The variations in activity and efficiency Of mesothorium can possibly best be illustrated by the follow ing measurements which Dr. Paneth, assistant in the Radium Research Institute Of the Vienna Academy Of Sciences has kindly made on my mesothorium preparation. Activity measurements of Mesothorium Applicator 2 Based on International Radium Standard. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Radium, Vol. 14: A Monthly Journal Devoted to the Chemistry, Physics and Therapeutics of Radium and Radio-Active Substances; November, 1919 Schauta reported 11 clinical cures out of 16 patients with cancer of the cervix treated by radium and mesothorium. He believed that radium was the more effective of the two agents. Schindler described some very favorable -results in the treatment of cancer of the cervix by mesothorium and radium. The Chemistry of the Actinide and Transactinide Elements is a contemporary and definitive compilation of chemical properties of all of the actinide elements, especially of the technologically important elements uranium and plutonium, as well as the transactinide elements. In addition to the comprehensive treatment of the chemical properties of each element, ion, and compound from atomic number 89 (actinium) through to 109 (meitnerium), this multi-volume work has specialized and definitive chapters on electronic theory, optical and laser fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, organoactinide chemistry, thermodynamics, magnetic properties, the metals, coordination chemistry, separations, and trace analysis. Several chapters deal with environmental science, safe handling, and biological interactions of the actinide elements. The Editors invited teams of authors, who are active practitioners and recognized experts in their specialty, to write each chapter and have endeavoured to provide a balanced and insightful treatment of these fascinating elements at the frontier of the periodic table. Because the field has expanded with new spectroscopic techniques and environmental focus, the work encompasses five volumes, each of which groups chapters on related topics. All chapters represent the current state of research in the chemistry of these elements and related fields.

Unravelling the Mystery of the Atomic Nucleus is a history of atomic and nuclear physics. It begins in 1896 with the discovery of radioactivity, which leads to the discovery of the nucleus at the center of the atom. It follows the experimental discoveries and the theoretical developments up to the end of the Fifties. Unlike previous books regarding on history of nuclear physics, this book methodically describes how advances in technology enabled physicists to probe the physical properties of nuclei as well as how the physical laws which govern these microscopic systems were progressively discovered. The reader will gain a clear understanding of how theory is inextricably intertwined with the progress of technology. Unravelling the Mystery of the Atomic Nucleus will be of interest to physicists and to historians of physics, as well as those interested development of science.

and less as the emanation unden\'ent radioactive decay, and it became motion less after about 30 seconds. Since this process was occurring very rapidly, Hahn and Sackur marked the position of the pointer on a scale with pencil marks. As a timing device they used a metronome that beat out intervals of approximately 1. 3 seconds. This simple method enabled them to determine that the half-life of the emanations of actinium and emanium were the same. Although Giesel's measurements had been more precise than Debierne's, the name of actinium was retained since Debierne had made the discovery first. Hahn now returned to his sample of barium chloride. He soon conjectured that the radium-enriched preparations must harbor another radioactive sub stance. The liquids resulting from fractional crystallization, which were sup posed to contain radium only, produced two kinds of emanation. One was the long-lived emanation of radium, the other had a short life similar to the emanation produced by thorium. Hahn tried to separate this substance by adding some iron to the solutions that should have been free of radium, but to no avail. Later the reason for his failure became apparent. The element that emitted the thorium emanation was constantly replenished by the ele ment believed to be radium. Hahn succeeded in enriching a preparation until it was more than 100,000 times as intensive in its radiation as the same quantity of thorium.
