Maryam Baouardy is a daughter of Galilee, from a very poor family. At the age of three, she lost her father and mother and was adopted by her uncle. She never learned how to read or write, but her life became a remarkable succession of supernatural manifestations, worthy of Catherine of Siena or Teresa of Avila, from the stigmata to singular battles against Satan. From where does she draw the heavenly wisdom, childlike yet strong, that made her loved by all? Where does this burning love that consumes her come from? For her, just as for St. Paul, “to live is Christ”. This beautiful “Lily of Palestine” became Sr. Maryam of Jesus Crucified in the Carmelite Order. Both humble guardian of the grille and formidable forewoman, she was often visited by Jesus and Mary. The words she transmits from them, pearls of great price, are significant for us today as they enlighten the future of our broken world. Maryam died in Bethlehem in her 33rd year, on August 26, 1878, shortly after the birth of Thérèse of Lisieux in France. Pope John Paul II beatified her on November 13, 1983. It is impossible to know Maryam without falling in love with her, without yearning for holiness, at her school.

This volume explores the meanings, lessons, and reminders of Sūrah Maryam. Sūrah Maryam is the 19th Sūrah in the Quran. It is a relatively long Makkan Sūrah made up of 98 verses. Some commentators mention that it's the 44th Sūrah to be revealed, after Sūrah al-Fāṭir and before Sūrah ṬāHā. It has been given the name Maryam because Allah ﷻ mentions the story of Maryam (as) and her family and how she miraculously gave birth to ʿIsā (as) at the beginning of the Sūrah. Just like other Makkan revelation, it deals with the most fundamental aspects of our faith. It talks about the existence and oneness of Allah ﷻ, prophethood, and resurrection and recompense. The Sūrah is made up of a series of unique stories filled with guidance and lessons that are meant as reminders. One of the main themes of this Surah is the infinite, limitless, all-encompassing, and divine mercy of Allah ﷻ. Mercy, or raḥmah, has been mentioned over 16 times in this beautiful and powerful Sūrah. We'll find the words of grace, compassion, and their synonyms frequently mentioned throughout the Sūrah, together with Allah's attributes of beneficence and mercy. We can say that one of the objectives of the Sūrah is to establish and affirm the attribute of mercy for Allah ﷻ. That's why all of the stories mentioned also have to do with Allah's mercy.

The Islamic view of Jesus lies between two extremes. The Jews, who rejected Jesus as a prophet, called him an imposter, while the Christians, on the other hand, considered him to be the son of God and worship him as such. Islam considers Jesus to be one of the greatest and most forbearing of prophets, in addition to Noah, Abraham, Moses and Muhammad, peace be upon them. Jesus is also considered to be the Messiah as well. This is in conformity with the Islamic view of the Oneness of God, the Oneness of Divine guidance, and the complementary role of the subsequent mission of God's messengers. The message of God to humanity, which is to worship God and God alone and to live according to His instruction, was revealed to Adam (peace be upon him), who passed it on to his children. All the subsequent revelations to Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and, finally, Muhammad are in conformity with that message. Thus, Islam views any contradictions among revealed religions as man-made elements introduced into these religions. The position of Jesus in the three major creeds- Judaism, Christianity, and Islam- is not an exception. La visión islámica de Jesús se encuentra entre dos extremos. Los judíos, que rechazaron a Jesús como un profeta, lo llamaron un impostor, mientras que los cristianos, por otro lado, lo consideraron como el hijo de Dios y lo adoraron como tal.
