This text covers over 2,000 years, tracing the roots of the contemporary Mexican-American. It utilizes the fields of history, political science, cultural anthropology, folklore, literature, sociolinguistics, Latin American studies and ethnic studies. Thus, it is unique for its multidisciplinary approach which probes into the past of the underclass--the exploited Native-American, Campesino and Mexican-American. It presents, therefore, an insider's view of the history, culture and politics of the Mestizo/Mestiza as an underclass. Most important, it presents a new perspective that invalidates the current Spanish/European and Western interpretation of Native-American reality.

In a time of nationwide riots and protest throughout America this is a timely work by the authors that gets down to the nitty gritty of discrimination in America as experienced by his father, his mother and himself. This author a Filipino-Caucasian mestizo tells you what discrimination is really like from a historical first-person experience as he has lived it every day and been exposed to it on the streets, in the schools and in bureaucracies of America. His no holds barred story, paints a clear picture of what discrimination really looks like, feels like and how it impacts one’s outlook on life and the “American Dream”. He tells how despite his father migrating thousands of miles to experience the American dream and his mother a white American desiring for him to live and self-actualize that American dream, he experiences being a white American trapped in a brown skin and who will never be accepted by Americans universally as a “real” American. The author offers his perspective on American biases and deceit, cleverly disguised under pretenses of justice, fairness, equal opportunity, and equality under God. He challenges the reader’s analytical objectivity and conscience to first self-assess the validity of his assertions and then walk through these pages of life experiences with him in his shoes for clarity of understanding and empathy as to the denial of this first generation mestizo’s quest to be a real American and live the American Dream. The author makes a valid case that since the anti-Filipino riots in Watsonville, California in 1919 and posting of signs in businesses reading “No Dogs or Filipinos Allowed”, the multi-cultural 2020 riots for equality and justice throughout the United States graphically show that the Heart of Americans has not changed much, if any - racism is still alive and well throughout.

The United States of Mestizo is a powerful manifesto attesting to the fundamental changes the nation has undergone in the last half-century. Writer Ilan Stavans meditates on how the cross-fertilizing process that defined the Americas during the colonial period--the racial melding of Europeans and indigenous peoples--foretells the miscegenation that is the most salient profile of America today. If, as W.E.B. DuBois once argued, the twentieth century was defined by a color fracture at its core, Stavans believes the twenty-first will be shaped by a multi-color line that will make us all a sum of parts.

A beloved merengue song-a phantom from the fifties-connects a haunted cast of characters, each in search of redemption. Elderly merengue star Ignacio dos Santos wrote this popular song-"Estrellita Luminosa." He once did the mambo with Hollywood star Marilyn Monroe and lived a fulfilling life. After enduring twenty years as an alcoholic in self-exile, he now dwells in a masochistic world of memories and regrets, as he searches for a reason not to self-destruct. He finds sanctuary in the brutal cockfighting pits he once turned his back on. Through the victories of Mr.Mestizo, a champion rooster, Ignacio chases his deliverance towards the grave. Also in the Dominican Republic are young Maximo and his sister, Lourdes. Tragically, a crocodile severs Maximo's leg and shatters his dream of one day pitching for the New York Mets. The incident sets his life on a collision course with a vicious human trafficker who is after his sister. In order to save her, Maximo must conquer his fears and battle against his own physical and emotional handicaps. After Jaragua saves a man's life in prison, a secret society welcomes him into a world of death matches and drug smuggling. Despite the madness in his life, he remains devoted to a beautiful merengue singer named Estrellita. He must now choose between the darkness within and the only woman he has ever loved. All of these damaged characters have decisions to make, but there's no telling whether their choices will bring them happiness or damnation.

Affectual Erasure written by Cynthia Margarita Tompkins and has been published by SUNY Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-08-23 with History categories.

Comprehensive examination of how Indigenous peoples have been represented in Argentine film. Affectual Erasure examines how Argentine cinema has represented Indigenous peoples throughout a period spanning roughly a century. Cynthia Margarita Tompkins interrelates her discussion of films with the ethnographic context of the Indigenous peoples represented and an analysis of the affective dimensions at play. These emotions underscore the inherent violence of generic conventions, as well as the continued political violence preventing Indigenous peoples from access to their ancestral lands and cultural mores. Tompkins explores a broad range of movies beginning in the silent period and includes both feature films and documentaries, underscored by archival and contemporary film stills. She traces the initial erotic projection, moving through melodrama to the conventions of the Western, into the 1960s focus on decolonization, superseded by allegorical renditions and the promise of self-expression in late twentieth-century documentaries. Each section includes an introduction to the sociohistorical events of the period and their impact on film production. Analyzed chronologically, the films evidence different stages in the projection of the hegemonic Argentine imaginary, which fails to envision the daily life of Indigenous peoples prior to conquest or in colonial times—and remains in denial of their existence in the present. “Cynthia Margarita Tompkins’s book is the most comprehensive analysis of the cinematic representations of Argentinean Indigenous peoples ever written. Her writing is lucid, insightful, grounded in a thorough familiarity with the films, and aware of the most current theoretical debates in film/theory and cultural studies. The book will surely become a breakthrough in its field.” — Santiago Juan-Navarro, author of Archival Reflections: Postmodern Fiction of the Americas (Self-Reflexivity, Historical Revisionism, Utopia)
