Idioms carry an aura of mystery for all speakers, owing to the discrepancy between their literal and non-literal meanings. This book clears up some of these ambiguities, by examining a series of expressions that have derived from the most instinctive and essential of all human behaviour: eating and drinking. The quantity and quality of 276 food and drink idioms are explored, investigating two hundred and fifty years of English monolingual lexicography and forty years of usage as attested by contemporary linguistic corpora. The examination of these idioms’ syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, historical, social and cultural characteristics will foster in speakers a whole new approach to idiom comprehension and usage, and will constitute thought-provoking ground for further research in other idiom domains.

Le più recenti acquisizioni della neuropsicologia cognitiva hanno consentito di focalizzare la natura dei processi linguistici e comunicativi, individuando i correlati fisiologici ed anatomici sottostanti alla produzione (encoding) e alla comprensione (decoding) del linguaggio. La prima sezione intende esplorare i paradigmi, i metodi e gli strumenti della neuropsicologia "per" la comunicazione. In particolare viene fornita una sintesi dei più recenti approcci di ricerca e degli strumenti empirici applicati allo studio del processo comunicativo, tra i quali la rilevazione dei correlati fisiologici (indici periferici), cognitivi (indici centrali, tra cui i potenziali evento-correlati), e le rilevazioni mediante neuroimaging (come la risonanza magnetica funzionale). Nella seconda sezione del contributo vengono prese in considerazione le componenti pragmatiche della comunicazione. Recenti modelli hanno focalizzato la propria attenzione su alcuni fenomeni peculiari dello scambio comunicativo che evidenziano il ruolo prioritario del "voler dire" nella comunicazione ordinaria. Specificamente facciamo riferimento ai fenomeni dell’ironia e della comunicazione idiomatica, della metafora e, più in generale, del linguaggio iconico o figurato. Particolare attenzione sarà riservata alle recenti acquisizioni empiriche che hanno sottolineato l’indipendenza delle componenti pragmatiche rispetto al piano prettamente "linguistico". La terza sezione del contributo intende analizzare il piano comunicativo non-verbale, con particolare attenzione alla comunicazione delle emozioni. Più specificamente vengono prese in considerazione le componenti mimiche (volto) e vocali (voce) nell’encoding e nel decoding delle emozioni.

L'uso degli strumenti elettronici e del modello di comunicazione che essi veicolano, tende al ridimensionamento della lingua, al suo progressivo impoverimento, la sintesi delle parole: la sintesi della comunicazione, che non si traducono solo in una scrittura scorretta ma altresì in un impoverimento del pensiero; riducendo le parole riduco le emozioni, nego la mia capacità di conoscere il mondo, di rinnovarne il senso al di là di generici schemi precostituiti. Non ci dobbiamo lasciare dominare dal linguaggio, la lingua materna è la nostra culla, il luogo nel quale siamo stati accolti ed avvicinati alla comprensione del mondo, ma dobbiamo conoscerla intimamente; i ragazzi devono avere la capacità di comprendere che il linguaggio non proviene solo dall'esterno ma è qualcosa che si annida dentro di loro, che dalla loro intimità può prendere vita e leggendo, studiando, scrivendo, in vari modi essi possono foggiarlo e di conseguenza comprendere e ampliare il mondo. La metafora con la sua capacità di attivare processi mentali complessi, la sua polisemia di significato, la sua trasversalità rispetto ai diversi usi del linguaggio si presta ad attivare nella mente degli allievi processi che aiutano a pensare, creare, autoregolarsi, organizzare e interpretare.
