Jest to książka (dzieło?) z pogranicza filozofii nauki, teorii literatury, językoznawstwa i historii nauki (ściślej – polskiego literaturoznawstwa). Autor podejmuje bowiem zagadnienie metaforycznych konceptualizacji pojęcia ‘tekstu’ w literaturoznawstwie polskim. W teoretycznych ramach koncepcji stylów i kolektywów myślowych Ludwika Flecka umieszcza zagadnienie metafory w nauce i za pomocą tak wypracowanych narzędzi analizuje teksty literaturoznawcze publikowane od początku XX wieku do początku lat 90. w „Pamiętniku Literackim” (najważniejszym chyba, a z pewnością jedynym polskim specjalistycznym czasopiśmie tej dziedziny, które zachowało ciągłość wydawniczą). Autor poszukuje w ten sposób metafor w tekstach naukowych, starając się zbadać, w jaki sposób zmieniało się pojęcie ‘tekstu’. Za sprawą jakich metafor następowała zmiana znaczenia tego pojęcia? Kiedy pojęcie ‘tekstu’ zastąpiło pojęcie ‘dzieła’? Wszak to pierwsze było kiedyś jedynie przedmiotem krytyki tekstu, czyli dziedziny jedynie pomocniczej, to drugie zaś właściwym przedmiotem badań literaturoznawców. Dziś jednak literaturoznawcy zajmują się już raczej ‘tekstami’ niż ‘dziełami’…

It was only after I had finished this volume that I came across the book by Barry Bames, Scientific Knowledge and Sociologi cal Theory (Routledge and Kegan Paul). I am in full ag, reement with certain ideas expounded in that book, although it also contains others that I must object to. I have decided to make some remarks about them at the beginning of my book, as I believe that they may prove useful by way of int, roduction to the English version of this volume. I hope that anyone who has professional reasons to turn his attention to this volume will have acquainted himself with Scientific Knowledge and Socio logical Theory before he proceeds any further. I fully share Barnes' view that it is possible and desirable to undertake descrtptive-sociological investigations of scientific research. The main subjeot of this research should be the na tural science, and, moreover, such findings in these sciences whose cognitive value has never been questioned by profession als. These investigations must avoid becoming entangled in epistemologtical controversies, and through epi:stemo}. ogy in, phi losophical controversies. They must not defend any of the contended theses and must not Hrterally, rely on evaluative pre mises that have been questicmed.

This book reconstructs the history of skepticism ranging from ancient to contemporary times, from Pyrrho to Kripke. The main skeptical stances and the historical reconstruction of the concept of skepticism are connected with an analysis of their recurrent inconsistency. The author reveals that this inconsistency is not a logical contradiction but a pragmatic one. She shows that it is a contradiction between the content of the skeptical position and the implicit presumption of the act of its assertion. The thesis of global skepticism cannot be accepted as true without falling into the pragmatic inconsistency. The author explains, how skepticism was important for exposing the limits of human knowledge and inspired its development.
