The Cratylus Of Plato written by Francesco Ademollo and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-02-03 with Philosophy categories.

The Cratylus, one of Plato's most difficult and intriguing dialogues, explores the relations between a name and the thing it names. The questions that arise lead the characters to face a number of major issues: truth and falsehood, relativism, etymology, the possibility of a perfect language, the relation between the investigation of names and that of reality, the Heraclitean flux theory and the Theory of Forms. This full-scale commentary on the Cratylus offers a definitive interpretation of the dialogue. It contains translations of the passages discussed and a line-by-line analysis which deals with textual matters and unravels Plato's dense and subtle arguments, reaching a novel interpretation of some of the dialogue's main themes as well as of many individual passages. The book is intended primarily for graduate students and scholars, in both philosophy and classics, but presupposes no previous acquaintance with the subject and is accessible to undergraduates.

Poetry. Bilingual Edition. Translated from the Italian by Riccardo Duranti, Anamaria Crowe Serrano, and Anthony Molino. Edited by Anthony Molino. In his introduction, "On Reading Valerio Magrelli," Oxford Professor Peter Hainsworth describes the title work as "a striking, ambitious and indeed ingenious creation, evidence of a poetric strategy that daringly spearheads and remains at the forefront of Italian poetry today." Valerio Magrelli is recognized in Italy as one of the country's most imaginative, innovative and vision-altering poets yet still remains insufficiently known to the English-speaking world. The present bilingual collection, combining selections from two works of the 1980s under the title Nearsights, together with the complete composition of 1999, "Instructions on How to Read a Newspaper," strives to rectify this situation.

One of the foremost contemporary French philosophers, his work is influenced by Husserl, Marcel and Jaspers and is particularly concerned with symbolism, the creation of meaning and the interpretation of texts. The Conflict of Interpretations ranges across an astonishing diversity of fields: structuralism, linguistics, psychoanalysis, religion and faith. The essays it comprises are bound together by Ricoeur's customary concern for interpretation and language and all bear the stamp of the systematic and critical thinking which has become his hallmark in contemporary philosophy. Definiteness written by Christopher Lyons and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-03-13 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This 1999 textbook investigates definiteness both from a comparative and a theoretical point of view, showing how languages express definiteness and what definiteness is. It surveys a large number of languages to discover the range of variation in relation to definiteness and related grammatical phenomena, such as demonstratives, possessives and personal pronouns. It outlines work done on the nature of definiteness in semantics, pragmatics and syntax, and develops an account on which definiteness is a grammatical category represented in syntax as a functional head (the widely discussed D). Consideration is also given to the origins and evolution of definite articles in the light of the comparative and theoretical findings. Among the claims advanced are that definiteness does not occur in all languages, though the pragmatic concept which it grammaticalizes probably does.
