Owing to efforts and legislative action - initiated above all by the government of the United States - to use cleaner fuels and thus make a contribution towards a better environment, public attention is back again on using methanol in carbu rettor and diesel engines. Most prominent among the raw materials from which methanol can be produced is coal, whose deposits and resources are many times larger than those of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbons. This book deals with the production of methanol from coal. It describes both the individual steps that are required for this process and the essential ancillary units and offsites associated with the process itself . . It is not meant to inform the reader about the intricate details of the processes, which can much better be taken from the specialized literature that deals exclusively and in detail with them or from the well-known standard engineering books. Rather, this book is to give the reader an impression how manifold a field this is, how many process variations and combinations the designer of such plants has to consider in order to arrive at an optimum design in each particular case. Apart from the production of chemical-grade methanol, the book deals briefly also with fuel methanol production, i. e. with the production of alcohol mixes. One of the many possible routes from coal to methanol is illustrated by a process flow diagram, and a material and energy balance is compiled for this typical example.

The Hynol Process for conversion of coal and natural gas to methanol as a liquid fuel consists of three consecutive unit operations (1) hydrogasification of coal, (2) steam reforming of the methane formed and added natural gas feedstock, and (3) catalytic methanol synthesis. The Hynol Process is a total recycle process. Using a process simulation computer program, mass and energy balances and yields and efficiency data have been obtained for a range of natural gas to coal feedstock ratios. Although the methanol yield increases with natural gas to coal feed ratio, the cost of feedstock per unit methanol is insensitive over a wide range of feedstock ratios. The Hynol Process produces a 13% increase in methanol yield compared to the equivalent of two separate conventional coal gasification and natural gas reforming plants. The CO2 emissions are reduced by 22% for the Hynol plant compared to the conventional processes with greater CO2 reductions at lower gas to coal feedstock ratios. A preliminary cost estimate for a 10,000 Tons/Day Hynol methanol plant indicates a lower production cost than the current cost of methanol by the conventional natural gas reforming plant. The lower unit energy cost for coal is beneficial in reducing the methanol cost in the Hynol Process.

The coal-based chemical process is still indispensable in modern society due to the worldwide vast reserves and popular price of coal. Power generation and chemical production from coal still play an important role in the global chemical industrial market. Electricity generation and chemical production from coal is still the trend as long as the coal is plentiful and inexpensive. Modern chemical industry aims at sustainability and hence the development of clean coal technologies is critical. Coal-based methanol economy, as an attractive liquid transportation fuel as well as an essential intermediate chemical feedstock, can fill a possible gap between declining fossil fuel supplies and movement toward the hydrogen economy. The integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plant with methanol production is simulated by Aspen Plus. Within the plant, firstly, the coal is fed to a pyrolysis reactor, and the volatile matter is fed into an oxy-combustion reactor, while the char is gasified in an entrained flow gasifier. The heat is used to produce electricity, while the syngas is converted to methanol. The integral plant consisting of an air separation unit, oxy-combustion of coal, gasification of char, electric power production, carbon capture and conversion to methanol has been designed and optimized by using the Aspen Plus package. The optimization includes the design specification, process heat integration using energy analyzer toward a more efficient clean-coal technology with methanol production. Multiple methods including life cycle assessment, sustainability metrics, and multi-criteria decision matrices are applied to analyze the sustainability of a certain clean-coal based IGCC power plant with methanol production. The focus of this study is the kinetic study of a clean coal energy technology with power and methanol production. As an alternative method, chemical looping technology is discussed briefly. Chemical looping technology is a new method utilizing inherent CO2 capture to address the concerns of growing levels of atmospheric CO2. The studied IGCC plant is compared with a conventional IGCC power plant to better understand the feasibility of the technology. A multi-criteria decision matrix consisting of economic indicators as well as the sustainability metrics shows that methanol and steam productions besides the power production may improve the overall feasibility of clean coal technology. The goal of this work aims at developing the use of abundant resources of coal energy in the following aspects: energy security, reduction of Greenhouse Gas emission, co-production and kinetics study in coal-based chemical processes and sustainability analysis.
