Metropole, Provinz und Welt bilden in der Literatur des deutschsprachigen Realismus ein mehrbezügliches Spannungsfeld, mit dessen Hilfe sich die Autoren des 19. Jahrhunderts intensiver und subtiler als oft gedacht mit dem radikalen Wandel der Lebenswelt im Zeichen beschleunigter Modernisierung mit wachsender räumlicher und sozialer Mobilität sowie mit der eurozentrischen Vernetzung der Welt im Zeitalter kolonialer Expansion und kapitalistischer Globalisierung auseinandersetzen. Vor dem Hintergrund des 'spatial turn' in den Kulturwissenschaften, postkolonialer u.a. aktueller Forschungsansätze verbindet der Band übergreifende, systematische und historische Perspektiven zum Raum- und Zeitdiskurs im Realismus mit exemplarischen und vergleichenden Fallstudien. Neben bekannten Werken führender Autoren wie Stifter, Keller, Auerbach, v.a. aber Raabe und Fontane erweisen sich auch Texte von weniger prominenten AutorInnen als aufschlussreich für eine Revision eingefahrener Vorstellungen über den deutschen Realismus. Auf der Grundlage der gemeinsamen Tagung der Fontane- und Raabe-Gesellschaften (Berlin 2011) erarbeitet der Band mit Blick auf die 'mental maps' und Chronotopologien des Erzählens neue Perspektiven der Realismus-Forschung.

Der Sammelband berücksichtigt daher literarische Aspekte ebenso wie linguistische und landeskundliche. Er verbindet Einzelbetrachtungen gesellschaftlicher Erscheinungen aus zwei Jahrhunderten in der West-, Ost- und Südslavia sowie in Westeuropa und schafft so ein gesamteuropäisches Panorama, das sich bis in die Gegenwart erstreckt.

As German-language literature turned in the mid-nineteenth century to the depiction of the profane, sensual world, a corresponding anxiety emerged about the terms of that depiction—with consequences not only for realist poetics but also for the conception of the material world itself. At the Limit of the Obscene examines the roots and repercussions of this anxiety in German realist and postrealist literature. Through analyses of works by Adalbert Stifter, Gustav Freytag, Theodor Fontane, Arno Holz, Gottfried Benn, and Franz Kafka, Erica Weitzman shows how German realism’s conflicted representations of the material world lead to an idea of the obscene as an excess of sensual appearance beyond human meaning: the obverse of the anthropocentric worldview that German realism both propagates and pushes to its crisis. At the Limit of the Obscene thus brings to light the troubled and troubling ontology underlying German realism, at the same time demonstrating how its works continue to shape our ideas about representability, alterity, and the relationship of human beings to the non-human well into the present day.

This edited collection makes a progressive intervention into the interdisciplinary field of memory studies with a series of essays drawn from diverse theoretical, practitional and cultural backgrounds. The most seminal critical development within memory studies in recent years has arguably been the turn towards transculturalism. This movement engenders a series of methodologies that posit remembrance as a fluid process in which commemorative tropes work to inform the representation of diverse events and traumas beyond national or cultural boundaries, transcending – but not negating – spatial, temporal and ideational differences. Examining a wide range of historical and cultural contexts, the essays in this collection focus on the dialogues that shape processes of remembrance between and beyond borders, critiquing the problems and possibilities inherent in current discourses in memorial practice and theory as they approach the challenge of transculturalism.
