Un Guide, Un panorama, une Histoire Chaque guide se présente en 3 parties : - Un aperçu historique de la ville ou de la région depuis l’Antiquité - Une présentation de la grande guerre dans le secteur avec, parfois, le déroulement au jour le jour, ou au moins les grandes phases et les principales batailles. Le rôle des chefs et des différentes unités est précisé, des cartes historiques illustrent les mouvements. - Une partie « touristique » qui emmène le lecteur, avec des itinéraires repérés sur le terrain et beaucoup de photos, sur les différents champs de bataille. Il était très important à l’époque de suivre les consignes et d’éviter les zones interdites car dangereuses. Ce guide n’a pas été conçu pour de simples visites, mais comme un « véritable pèlerinage », un « hommage à la mémoire des héros tombés pour la France ». La richesse des documents ne manquera pas de passionner le visiteur qui parcourt les champs de bataille aujourd’hui. Elle offre un éclairage inédit sur chaque région, et permet de constater l’évolution des paysages, là où l’urbanisme et la nature ont effacé toutes les traces de cette guerre.

This is the first comprehensive analysis of public and private welfare in France available in English, or French, which offers a deeply-researched explanation of how France's welfare state came to be and why the French are so attached to it. The author argues that France simultaneously pursued two different paths toward universal social protection. Family welfare embraced an industrial model in which class distinctions and employer control predominated. By contrast, protection against the risks of illness, disability, maternity, and old age followed a mutual aid model of welfare. The book examines a remarkably broad cast of actors that includes workers' unions, employers, mutual leaders, the parliamentary elite, haut fonctionnaires, doctors, pronatalists, women's organizations - both social Catholic and feminist - and diverse peasant organisations. It also traces foreign influences on French social reform, particularly from Germany's former territories in Alsace-Lorraine and Britain's Beveridge Plan.
