Excerpt: Jose Pablo Moncayo Garcia (June 29, 1912-June 16, 1958) was a Mexican pianist, percussionist, music teacher, composer and conductor. "As composer, Jose Pablo Moncayo represents one of the most important legacies of the Mexican nationalism in art music, after Silvestre Revueltas and Carlos Chavez." He produced some of the masterworks that best symbolize the essence of the national aspirations and contradictions of Mexico in the 20th century. Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Jose Pablo Moncayo was introduced to music by his elder brother Francisco. Eduardo Hernandez Moncada is reported as the first teacher of Jose Pablo Moncayo in 1926, when the teenager was fourteen years old. According to Aurelio Tello, Hernandez Moncada suggested his pupil Moncayo study at the National Conservatory. Tello reports that Moncayo was admitted to the conservatory in 1929; meanwhile, in order to finance his studies, he worked as a jazz pianist. According to the research of Torres-Chibras, different sources point out the fact that Moncayo took composition lessons with Candelario Huizar, and it is known that he continued his piano instruction with Hernandez Moncada. The purpose of this dissertation is to discover if Arturo Fuentes' Primer Interludio incorporates a number of stylistic features typical of guitar music written by Mexican contemporaries from 1988 to 2003. These features include the use of complex musical notation, highly disjunct melodic contour, extended techniques, innovative timbres, rhythmic complexity, rapidly changing dynamics, atonality, percussive effects and repetitive rhythmic and/or melodic cells. As a point of departure a list of guitar works by representative Mexican composers was compiled. From this list the following works were chosen since they exemplify the stylistic trends I wish to highlight: Tres InstantŁ̧neas (1988) by Manuel EnrƯ̧quez, Sonata (1992) and ElegƯ̧a 2 (2000) by Hebert VŁ̧zquez, Haikus (2000) by Ana Lara, Sydolira (2000) by Gabriela OrtƯ̧z, and Impello (2003) by Francisco Javier GonzŁ̧lez CompeŁ̧n. By comparative analysis, I have associated certain stylistic features between these contemporary Mexican composers. I have been able to get a glimpse of some of the underlying stylistic unities found in these guitar compositions that seem rather separate. There are a number of stylistic features common to all of the composers discussed herein as well as few characteristics where only some of them converge. However, this research shows that Arturo Fuentes' Primer Interludio is representative of several stylistic features commonly found in guitar music written by contemporary Mexican composers. There is a vast variety of Mexican guitar works created in recent years that remain unknown to today's classical music world, academic community and general public. Mexico possesses a large repertoire of guitar works, music for solo guitar and guitar with a wide array of ensemble combinations from duets to large ensembles and guitar concertos. Many of these works would undoubtedly challenge a performer of the highest caliber. One of the purposes of this project is to promote contemporary Mexican classical guitar music. I hope to awake interest in this contemporary music style and encourage other musicians to include Mexican works in their concert repertoire.

While there are many Mexican Classical flute works, few are known within the United States and almost none would be considered part of the Western flute canon. The Mexican solo flute repertoire did not truly begin growing until 1960, when Blas Galindo wrote specifically for the flute in his Concierto para Flauta y Orquesta. Since that time, numerous Mexican composers have added brilliant and compelling works to the flute repertoire. However, only one work for flute and piano by a Mexican composer has really garnered any attention within the Western flute canon--Samuel Zyman's Sonata for Flute and Piano (1993). This study will explore Mexico's musical history, focusing on those works written for flute during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, many of which remain unpublished and largely unknown. The composers discussed include Manuel Ponce, Carlos Chavez, Blas Galindo, Silvestre Revueltas, José Pablo Moncayo, Julián Carillo, Samuel Zyman, Arturo Márquez, Mario Lavista, and Eduardo Angulo. Roberto Peña's Concierto para Flauta y Orquesta (2008), an unpublished work yet a sparkling addition to the repertoire, will be placed against this larger history with specific attention to its unique performing practice issues, such as: articulation, technique, breath control and the flute's interaction with the orchestra. Other recent compositions by Peña are also brought to light, in addition to selected works by some of the composers listed above, in hopes of contributing to a greater exposure and recognition of Mexican flute music within the Western flute community.

This research document contains an overview of four twenty-first century flute pieces by Mexican composers who in these works both expand flute repertoire and connect it to Mexican cultural and historical contexts: Rojas esta̹n las aguas (2003-2004) by Germa̹n Romero (b. 1966), Xochiatl (2008) by Diana Syrse (b. 1984), Estampas mexicanas (2014) by Jose̹ Elizondo (b. 1972), and Xibalba̹ (2016) by Rodrigo Acevedo Traba (b. 1992). These composers selected texts in either Spanish or Nahuatl and placed them in a variety of instrumental settings, styles, and techniques, while also looking back to pre-Hispanic and indigenous Mexican music as a source of inspiration. While the transverse flute arrived in Mexico in 1743, its repertoire as a solo instrument or in chamber music did not fully develop until the twentieth century.The purpose of this study is to survey four contemporary flute pieces by the Mexican composers, each of whom was interviewed for this study. This document includes a summary of the history of music in Mexico, biographical information about each composer, English translations of the narratives, an overview of the compositions, and interviews with the chosen composers. To provide a deeper insight into this flute repertoire and facilitate its accessible performance, an analysis of each musical composition, examination of the narrative, and investigation of the appropriate Mexican historical context will be presented.
