This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1892 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER THE FOURTH. CONCERNING POLITICS AND THE PEOPLE. In our northern houses the general requirement is gorgeousness, not to say giddiness, of exterior, with plenty of big plate-glass windows and no wall spaces whatever, together with a certain parvenu degree of comfort within, which, unfortunately, does not as yet seem compatible with true beauty, but the Mexican scorns all this and his first requisite seems to be not gorgeousness so much as an effect of picturesqueness without; this is certainly very kind of him, as it appeals much more to the wayfarer than to the S dweller within. Nearly all the poorer class habitations are in reality little more than one or two rectangular boxes of varying size, placed one against another. "Not so very picturesque a description," you say? Well! in a measure you are right, and yet the peons, for they never employ an architect for such buildings as these, of course, seem to have just that innate sense of what goes to make true beauty, that never errs: while one trained in such matters might waste days or weeks in straining after effects which they arrive at almost unconsciously. Why ! the meanest one of them will throw his zarape or shawllike blanket over his shoulder at just such an angle and proportion of length, and with such regard for color combination, as to render him irresistible to the artist. Mr. F. Hopkinson Smith has portrayed him so cleverly that it seems daring, indeed, to add one line, and yet I cannot resist introducing a sketch of one of my friends here. Perhaps he isn't handsome according to the canons which obtain with us, and yet this may be the fault of the drawing, added to the untranslatability of some of his most glowing characteristics, the humorous sparkle of his black...

According To Soledad written by Katie Goodridge Ingram and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-01-14 with categories.

Memoir of growing up in Mexico in the 1940s and 1950s by award-winning author."According to Soledad" gives voice to Katie Goodridge Ingram to tell the story of her bi-cultural childhood. She was born in Mexico City and was raised there and in Jalisco. Soledad speaks of being part American and part Mexican. She says: "My skin is white but my soul is brown." She knows city life with the family's multicultural and artistic friends. She also knows village life with no running water and no electricity. She feels like a hybrid but is intrigued by and devoted to her unusual immigrant parents who left the US to spend their lives in Mexico. Her father is a rare book dealer often away hunting for the find of a lifetime. Her mother is a designer with an adventurous spirit who learns to shoot a gun in order to protect their house from frequent burglaries. This story could be called "A border runs through it" to describe Soledad who manages two languages every day and is hyper-observant of the sometimes shocking differences among the Mexicans, Americans and foreigners in her life.Katie Goodridge Ingram was born in Mexico and lived there for many years, first in Mexico City and then in Ajijic, a village and artist colony on the shores of Lake Chapala in Jalisco. She wrote her first story when she was nine and has continued to write ever since. Much of her writing was influenced by the fact that, as a child of immigrants to Mexico, she felt neither completely Mexican nor fully foreign. In her articles for "Mexico City News" she followed two of her many interests: art and the cultural variety of people and villages in her area. In her gallery she exhibited the works of resident artists as well of visitors to the area and of newly discovered talent. When her children were small she co-founded a bilingual school with other parents. Her children are also bilingual and multi-cultural. Her poetry and short stories have appeared in a variety of anthologies, most recently in "SOLO NOVO: Psalms of Cinder and Silt." She is currently working on a novel set in the state of Michoacán.

Troubled Memories written by Oswaldo Estrada and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-07-11 with Literary Criticism categories.

Analyzes literary and cultural representations of iconic Mexican women to explore how these reimaginings can undermine or perpetuate gender norms in contemporary Mexico. In Troubled Memories, Oswaldo Estrada traces the literary and cultural representations of several iconic Mexican women produced in the midst of neoliberalism, gender debates, and the widespread commodification of cultural memory. He examines recent fictionalizations of Malinche, Hernán Cortés’s indigenous translator during the Conquest of Mexico; Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, the famous Baroque intellectual of New Spain; Leona Vicario, a supporter of the Mexican War of Independence; the soldaderas of the Mexican Revolution; and Frida Kahlo, the tormented painter of the twentieth century. Long associated with gendered archetypes and symbols, these women have achieved mythical status in Mexican culture and continue to play a complex role in Mexican literature. Focusing on contemporary novels, plays, and chronicles in connection to films, television series, and corridos of the Mexican Revolution, Estrada interrogates how and why authors repeatedly recreate the lives of these historical women from contemporary perspectives, often generating hybrid narratives that fuse history, memory, and fiction. In so doing, he reveals the innovative and sometimes troublesome ways in which authors can challenge or perpetuate gendered conventions of writing women’s lives. Oswaldo Estrada is Professor of Latin American Literature at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the author of Ser mujer y estar presente: Disidencias de género en la literatura mexicana contemporánea and La imaginación novelesca: Bernal Díaz entre géneros y épocas.
